With production in excess of 55,000 the Sherman tank was eventually in service with most Allied armies of the Second World War and by the time of the Normandy landings was the mainstay of Britain’s armoured battalions. In his second book in the TankCraft series, Dennis Oliver uses wartime photos and extensively researched, exquisitely presented colour illustrations to cover the Sherman tanks used by the units of the Royal Armoured Corps and the Royal Marines during the fighting in northern France. As with all the books in the TankCraft series, a large part of this work showcases available model kits and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field are also explained as is the complex system of markings employed by British armoured regiments. This book will give the modeller all the information and knowledge required to recreate an authentic miniature representation of the tanks that fought from the beaches of Normandy, through the battles for Caen and on to killing fields of Falaise.

A short, but good, overview of British use of the iconic tank.

A good mix of photographs, line drawings, deployments, OBATs, variant detail …. supporting the text.

The pictures are good quality reproductions and can be selected and zoomed easily. So, when the author refers to, for example, a small conical aerial or a distinctive unit marking, or a particular hatch type ….. you can actually zoom in and see it in the accompanying photo. And the pointing out of some of the small details – like the ad hoc steps welded onto one commander’s tank – gives a book about a lump of metal an occasional and surprising human touch.

Includes a large section on modelling the tank, supported by lots of supporting notes on availability of modelling ‘conversion kits’ for various M4/Sherman variants makes for interesting reading if you like that sort of thing. Feels a bit like an extended themed main article in ‘Military Modelling’ …. and nothing wrong with that.

Interesting book, I enjoyed it. I read this book last night, and I find myself recalling and enjoying some if its details today.

Outstanding detail….nothing else to add but to say that I wish that this book was around years ago

Very good information. Good selection of photos many I’d not seen before. Loses a star because of poor formatting.

Good, systematic and thorough description of the usage of Sherman tanks by British forces in Normandy. Well illustrated. Particularly geared towards modellers.

Sadly, the Kindle edition contains a number of typos and m is – spellings, with two sections (describing specific models) being incomprehensible due to transposed text.
