all of my tattoos were done at Lal Hardy’s studio. The first in October 1993 and the last in the summer of 2001. Some of the work was done by his staff and some by Lal himself. So when I saw this book I just wanted to drop a line to celebrate this beautiful, inspiring and informative project – and also to say what a kind, intelligent and empathetic Lal he was when working, a great listener and someone who turned his studio into a place that was welcoming, respectful and enjoyable for all visitors, regardless of sex, age, race or anything else. I remember being in there once when a woman with a literally newborn (3 week old) baby came in, wanting a tattoo done to commemorate new motherhood; and I also visited with my best friend’s mother who was contemplating getting some work done to celebrate her 50th birthday. Lal treated everyone, and his own staff, with tremendous respect and great knowledge – and he fostered a respectful, friendly and creatively free atmosphere that people want to return to, to have beautiful tattoos done.
The book arrived just as I was contemplating getting some more work done, and has provided a great deal of information and inspiration. It gives the background history of different traditions in tattooing and roams across the world reflecting on different styles and approaches. This is for people who are interested in the culture behind the ink.
