Tchaikovsky: The Man Revealed

A shy, emotional child, intended for the civil service by his father, Tchaikovsky came late to composing as a career, and despite his success he was a troubled character. Doubting himself at every turn, he was keenly wounded by criticism, while the death of his mother haunted him all his life, and his incessant attempts to suppress his homosexuality took a huge toll.
From his disastrous marriage to his extraordinary relationship with his female patron, his many amorous liaisons and his devotion to friends and family, Suchet shows us how the complexity of Tchaikovsky’s emotional life plays out in his music. A man who was by turns quick to laugh and to despair, his mercurial temperament found its outlet in some of the most emotionally intense music ever written.
Tchaikovsky: ¬The Man Revealed examines the complex and contradictory character of this great artist, long hidden behind sanitised depictions by his brother and the Russian authorities, and how he came to take his rightful place among the world’s greatest composers.

Visited the composers grave some years ago while adoring his works in general especially the Hymn of the Cherubim from The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom as recorded by The USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir, I had to learn at some point about his life – and am pleased to have read this book- rich in facts and the open ended questions….
Yes, do get a copy, it is fascinating, very moving and very revealing -thank you John Suchet and Classic FM.

HAVING READ SEVERAL BIOGRAPHIES OVER THE YEARS THIS BOOK IS MOST CONCENTRATED ON HIS SEXUALITY, PERHAPS TOO MUCH SO–AS HAS BEEN SAID BY OTHER CUTOMERS,,, BUT THEN LIKE BEETHOVEN HE WAS A VERY COMPLEX CHARACTER AND SUCH GREAT MASTERS FREQUENTLY DO HAVE ABERATIONS IN THEIR CHARACTERS THAT SEEM TO MAKE THEM DIFFERENT FROM ORDINARY PEOPLE….BEETHOVEN LOVED WOMEN. TCHAIKOVSKY LOVED MEN……

I love John Suchet and Tchaikovsky. The book was well written and has very good descriptions. I met John Suchet at the Stratford upon Avon Literary Festival.
John Suchet is a charming man and gave a really interesting talk. I love him as a presenter on Classic FM.

This is quite short for a biography of such a major figure as Tchaikovsky. It concentrates on his life, and particularly his homosexuality, rather than his music. The music is of course mentioned but it rarely goes into the pieces in any depth, just the writing of them and Tchaikovsky’s response to the reception. His death and marriage are of course covered, along with a few of his known relationships.
I don’t really feel I know Tchaikovsky any better as a result of reading this book. Maybe it’s because so much of Tchaikovsky’s life was secret it’s difficult to really get to his essence. I haven’t read any other books about him so I can’t point to anything wrong or absent in this one.
3.5 stars.

A well researched and informative book on the life of Tchaikovsky- as are all John Suchet’s books on musicians. It is also enjoyable to read, not just a dry type of biography but full of anecdotes and items of interest

I have ordered this book as surprise for Christmas for my husband who loves classical music. Obviously I don’t know yet what he will think of it but just from the look of this book I feel he will love it. Impressive-looking .
