The book is split into three key parts: planning, delivery, and leadership and management, and covers topics such as:

    • curriculum and assessment design
    • lesson planning
    • cognitive science behind learning
    • computing pedagogy and instructional principles

The Practical Handbook is a very apt subtitle, because the text offers some excellent ideas about how to teach Computer Science, such as templates and handouts.

William Lau offers some guidance and the advice is particularly useful for either ITTs or NQTs.

As a computer science teacher trainee this book has been immensely valuable to me. It covers all areas from curriculum planning, lesson planning and how to teach topics effectively to classroom layouts and behaviour management. Whenever I am stuck on ideas, this is the first book I turn to and it never fails to deliver. No doubt I will constantly be referring back to this book in the coming years.

With the start of teaching training in September on the horizon, I invested in a number of books on the subject. This is by far the most readable and is also packed with references should you need to read up on a subject further. I found the subject knowledge audit list in the first chapter very helpful and I’m now working my way through it in preparation. I also contacted the author on Twitter and he was super-helpful.

This book contains much of the collected wisdom of leading theory and research on peadogogy tailored to an audience of Computing teachers. It is actually a very useful book for any middle and indeed senior leader. Lou is clearly one of the leading lights in Computing. I have found the book to be immensely engaging and practical.

Coming from a department of me, myself, and I, this book has been amazing at making me question and challenge my teaching practise, and inspired me with tonnes of new ideas. Strongly recommend this book for Computing teachers with any amount of experience.

I started teaching KS3 Computing three years ago and have found this book invaluable. It is very well structured and William shares his knowledge and understanding of the subject with great clarity. Now as a new Head of Department I am again revisiting certain sections. Whatever your level of experience I would thoroughly recommend this book to you.
