Wow! I have read this book 3 times and have taken my time to process all the aspects written about reaching reading for pupils with PMLD and I have come to the same conclusion every time. I have finally found an author who actually gets it! I have been an SEN teacher for many, many years and there was so much information which was actually relevant and aimed at children with complex needs that I nearly shouted out with joy. There are lots of ideas and practical activities which have helped change and shape the way that I plan, deliver and share learning with the children in a way that is positive and meaningful for each one. Please, please keep your books coming as I find them informative, challenging to my own practice and easy to implement in a busy classroom. Thank you so much.

This book has come at just the right time for me as a reading lead in a special school due an Ofsted inspection imminently! Ch.5 was particularly helpful, ‘ the role of foundation skills and the teaching of reading’ focusing on where phonics fits for learners with complex needs. This book is really about ideas in action, a practical guide with case studies, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Dr Sarah has a wealth of experience and has a talent for making concepts and pedagogy, really accessible to the listener and reader. I have attended a number of her training courses and she’s a really genuinely decent educator, who has time for everyone.

This inspiring book is a wealth of ideas and information and a must have for all education professionals, parents/carers/siblings and anyone with an interest in making literacy accessible for all.

The author’s 30+ years knowledge and experience within special and mainstream education (her masters and PhD degrees were in special education, focusing specifically on the teaching of reading and self-esteem) equips you with the knowledge, ideas, tools and confidence to deliver interesting and motivating literacy sessions for all.

The clear and easy to follow organisation of the book makes it easy to read. Each chapter includes theory and the authors’ own experiences on a range of areas including how reading develops, the importance of creating accessible literacy- rich environments, practical ways to plan an inclusive reading curriculum, with real life examples of ideas in action and case studies from a wide range of contributors all with their own valuable and interesting ideas, experiences and insight to share.

Each chapter concludes with points of reflection and useful references for further.

Starting with the inspiring story of Timmy, a young man, diagnosed with complex and profound multiple learning difficulties whose life was greatly enriched through the magic and power of stories, Jonathan Bryan’s story, (I would urge everyone to read Jonathan’s book ‘Eye Can Write’) through to Amy’s story at the end, I read this book from cover to cover and highly recommend it.
