It was a birthday present for my nephew who is starting an apprenticeship at Rolls – Royce next year. I served my apprenticeship time at Royces & know that this book will give him a great grounding & understanding before starting his apprenticeship.

I teach GCSE Maths and thias book gives good simple explanations and ideas for the less able students. It would be good for those of you who claim not to “get” maths

Great for starting out Technical maths and Engineering.

Still a bit complex to read. Difficult to get child motivated with the book

I purchased this book as I am about to go back to studying and needed to brush up on my maths skills which were long forgotten. As with all ‘For Dummies’ books the format and pace of this introduction to technical maths is excellent and there is a good dollop of humour to go with it, making it less dry than any other maths book I have seen. It covers a good range of topics and pretty much all the bases you would expect, from simple arithmetic to trigonometry.
My man gripe with this book is that for a book that is supposed to assume little or no prior knowledge of technical maths it actually assumes a lot. As an example, in the section on subtraction it works though an example problem. This is done clearly and precisely and I felt confident that I would be able to replicate the method on other problems. However when I looked up some problems to solve I came across a problem. What if I was trying to subtract across zeros? This is obviously a common scenario and unfortunately I had to spend time googling the answer. Another example, the section on long division goes into great detail about the method but then says ‘and divide 84 by 16 and put the answer 5…Wait, how did you divide 84 by 16? It’s incredibly frustrating that details such as that are glossed over.
In summary this is a good introduction and when used in conjunction with other materials (I use the math page app) works well but don’t expect it to explain everything you may need to know
