I teach academic skills at a university and find this book takes an intelligent, thoughtful approach – relevant for most university disciplines. The content and exercises are realistic and (possibly a first for Ac Sk textbooks) the examples really are academic. There are also some excellent online resources giving answers to exercises and other support. Overall, an excellent resource for students or teachers.

As a teacher I find this a fantastic reference resource. Students often see academic guides as rather abstract, and struggle to apply the principles to their own work. With this guide I can pinpoint my students’ exact weaknesses and point them to the relevant chapter – the online examples are particularly useful for comparison and illustrate good and bad practice. (I am also filtering the guidance for my A-level teenager, with the aim of bridging the gap between school and university). I would urge any new undergraduate to familiarise themselves at least with the chapter headings before term starts, to demystify the academic process they will be using.

I got a copy of this to help my son with his university studies. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Accessible and clear it provided him with a valuable academic tool kit.

I bought this book on a recommendation from my tutor. And it’s brilliant! It explains really simply and clearly how to structure a lab report and what language to use in the different sections. That was something I was a bit worried about, and the book helped me understand what I needed to do. I really liked the online sample lab report as it gave me a model to work with when I was writing up my report. I used the diagnostic questions at the start of the chapters, and for the presentation chapter, it was great to watch the video to give me tips.
I really like this book and give it top marks!
by just read it. its worth it
Had to buy this book for college and it ended up helping a lot. Didn’t learn how to write an essay from my teachers so referred to the book often. Really handy for those who want/need help with essay writing

Very pleased with this book. I like the simple design as it’s easy to navigate and find what you want. It covers everything you need for academic writing, from getting started, to writing essays,to writing in exams etc but also critical reading skills, giving presentations, getting the most out of lectures. The book also has a diagnostic task so students can assess their own writing strengths and needs. This is linked to a website for the book which also has answers for tasks and other useful things. This book is really easy to dip in and out of.
I teach a lot of academic writing at University so I will definitely recommend this book for my undergraduate students but I think even postgraduates would benefit from brushing up their academic writing. I’ve only had the book a couple of days but I have already adapted one of the tasks for my teaching (Don’t worry guys! I always reference!).
