£14.80£17.10 (-13%)
Kumiko is a delicate and sophisticated art created by assembling small wooden pieces into beautiful patterns, and Matt Kenney’s latest book offers step-by-step instructions for 10 patterns, with a level of detail that cannot be found in print elsewhere.
Also included are cutting diagrams for several original decorative wall panels that make use of the patterns taught in the book. In The Art of Kumiko you’ll learn Kenney’s methods for making Kumiko, which combine the accuracy and efficiency of modern woodworking equipment with the precision of hand tools to create beautiful pieces. You’ll also learn how to incorporate Kumiko in both furniture designs and as stand-alone framed panels that pay homage to this centuries-old craft.

I like to work with hand tools as much as possible, so when I saw this book subtitled “Learn to Make Beautiful Panels by Hand” I thought it would be perfect. I was surprised and disappointed to see that a lot of the book talks about how to make jigs with a table saw and how the grids that form the frame of the kumiko are made with a table saw. The only thing done by hand is cutting the angles on the ends of the inner pieces (using a chisel and a jig made using a table saw).
If, like me, you want to learn about making Kumiko by hand, I’d recommend Desmond King’s books and Adrian Preda’s youtube videos instead of this book.
If you’re happy to use a table saw to do a lot of the work making kumiko, then this book is okay, although the Desmond King books give a lot more in the way of different patterns to try.
