In Braintenance, neuroscientist and science communicator Dr Julia Ravey explains how we can take control of our brains with methods based on research and turn our dreams into reality.

Have you ever wondered why you like to be in your comfort zone, or why New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep? Perhaps you want to start getting up earlier but when your alarm goes off your brain tells you to snooze. These are all scenarios many of us are in and Braintenance teaches us how we can take control over these situations!

Neuroscience as a subject always sounds complicated but in Braintenance Dr Julia Ravey writes in an easy-to-understand way which even the least scientific person can get behind. The book is split into different topics and each topic focuses on theory, how we can apply the theory and a section to consolidate all that we have learnt. Throughout the book the author asks questions which helps you to reflect and apply the theory to your own life and there are several diagrams if you prefer seeing things visually!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I found it incredibly empowering as it reminded me that if we put our mind to it, we can change/get better at things/knock bad habits on the head. What a way to start the year in books!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve always been fascinated by how things work and what makes us tick. Julia takes us through how our brain works, why we procrastinate and what we can do about it to get more out of life.

Julia focusses on our looking to understand what’s going on in our brains when we’re indecisive and can’t move forwards. Rather than beat ourselves up, or engage in hand wringing, she emphasises the need for self-compassion and to cut ourselves some slack when we hit a self-imposed road block. Julia then goes on to provide a range of helpful techniques we can use to overcome our internal resistance and get ourselves back on track.

I found the book very interesting and useful and will be applying the techniques to hopefully make procrastination a thing of the past.

I was given this book from the author via netgalley only for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review should I choose to.
