The characters and concept appear to have been lifted straight out of Phil Rickman’s Merrily Watkins books but the writing of The Burning Girls is much more naive – mostly in the first person, present tense. Much of the ‘twists’ are extraordinarily predictable. Despite all that – quite a decent read.

500 years ago, eight martyrs were burnt to death and 30 years ago, two teenagers vanished without trace. Two months ago, a vicar committed suicide. Welcome to Chapel Croft.
An intriguing mixture of horror and crime (that eases more completely into the latter as the book progresses), this follows Rev Jack Brooks who is assigned to the small town chapel from Nottingham, where she became embroiled in a case of abuse that escalated quickly. With her teenaged daughter Flo in tow, Jack tries to settle in to the close-knit community but the residents are haunted by history and tradition, as well as the legend of the burning girls themselves. I really enjoyed this (even if, like Tudor’s previous novel “The Chalk Man”, I felt there was one twist too many) for all manner of reasons. The town is well realised and so is the history, treated in a spooky, almost supernatural way that feels perfectly normal. Jack Brooks is a great character, as is Flo and the supporting cast acquit themselves well. Told with a good pace while carefully teasing out the back-story, this is gripping and scary and amusing and, at points, quite harrowing. A cracking novel, I highly recommend this.

The burning girls follows a vicar and their daughter, Flo, as they move to a new village. But there’s something dark and unusual going on here. The village is stuck in the past and has many secrets it is trying to protect. Are Jack and Flo safe here?

Wow, what a whirlwind of a book this one is! So much happened I’m still trying to unpick it all. It’s almost like reading multiple stories that have all been mashed together. I do like how they were all connected but it is hard for my brain to accept that it is all the same story. I loved the fast pace and short chapters. My main criticism is that I was able to guess some of the twists. This happens a lot to me, as an avid thriller reader, but luckily I was still surprised by some of the twists that happened! I also feel that the epilogue didn’t quite give the punchy finish I was craving.

That being said, I absolutely adored the atmosphere in this book. It reminded me of a wicker man/high school bully mash up! I almost felt like I was in a horror film that also involved a teenage high school. This book does touch on some very dark issues so please be cautious of possible triggers if you want to pick it up. I was almost left wanting more, I want to return to some of the characters and explore their lives and relationships more. The first thing I did when I put this book down was try to get my hands on all of CJ Tudor books!

I would recommend this book to any thriller fans! But please be cautious of possible triggers.

My own fault – I knew it was in the horror genre before I began it. Gripped by the first two-thirds and enjoyed the creepy supernatural feel. However, when it launched into full-blown horror, I only kept reading to find out how it would all tie up. Well written, with some satisfying twistiness, and page-turning, but ultimately the horror genre isn’t for me.

I really enjoyed this book. Lots of likeable characters and some unlikable. You root for Jack and Flo the whole way through. A surprising twist came at the end. You are pointed towards a culprit but things are not what they seem.

I enjoyed it, but it’s lacking something. The story feels quite erratic at times and a little out of sync.

Had seen that this book was being made into a tv series and thought ‘it must be good’. Wow, It did not disappoint! One of the best books I have read in a long time, and I have read many.
