The Bus We Loved: London’s Affair With The Routemaster
£6.50£7.60 (-14%)
In December 2005, London lost one its most famous symbols: the Routemaster bus – a bus designed and made in London, by Londoners for Londoners, which was to London what the gondola is to Venice. In terms of postcards, books, films and cheap souvenirs, and in the eyes of the world, the Routemaster represented the city just as much as Big Ben. It was the last bus to be have conductors as well as drivers, the last bus to ring familiar shouts that are at least a century old: ‘Fares please,’ ‘Full up inside but room on top,’ ‘Next stop the British Museum’! The last bus, in other words, to be a proper bus. In this fond history, Travis Elborough tells the story of the Routemaster’s invention, rise and decline, of the people who worked on it and of the enthusiasts who were mad about it. The streets will never be the same again.

A nice description of the Routemaster setting it in the context of the time it was in service and the public response to this atttempt to provide London with the best possible public transport vehicle.

THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE BOOK, WITH PLENTY OF NOSTALGIC INFO ON THE ROUTEMASTER BUS. IF I NEEDED TO REPLACE IT, I WOULD DO SO FOR A LARGER PRINT FORMAT, AS THE PICTURES ARE LOST A LITTLE..IT COULD BE MY EYESIGHT I SUPPOSE..
ON THE WHOLE THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR ALL TRANSPORT ENTHUSIASTS, AND WILL HELP WHILE AWAY THE HOURS ON ANY JOURNEY YOU TAKE.
BY THE BY…WHEN I ASK FOR HARDBACK, WHAT I EXPECT IS A NON FLEXING CARD, BUT WHAT I RECEIVED WAS A PAPERBACK WITH A PLASTIC FILM ON IT..THAT IS NOT WHAT I REGARD AS HARDBACK! SORRY, JUST A PERSONAL RANT! I`M SURE IT WAS NOT MEANT TO BE MISLEADING..?
DING DING!

I have just received the book today, and even though it is second hand it looks like new. I did contact seller Better World Books, and even though it was at weekend they were marvelous, and they got in touch with me in a matter of minuets, so all in all, well done Better World Books, thank you for a wonderful service.

There have been hundreds of books written about the Routmaster Bus over the years but this little book is a bit different.
It’s written from the view point of Londeners that used them every day, day in day out.
If you want a book that tells you all the details of the bus design, history etc, then this is not the book for you.
I liked it. Because it’s different. It was a good read.
