Having read the Sherlock Holmes books I must say that the case-book left me a little disappointed. There seems to be something lacking in the stories and they don’t have the same wow factor as the others. The mysteries seem to be a little bland and kind of “paint by numbers” in a way. Still a good read though and definitely worth picking up a copy if you have read the others. Perhaps not the best one to start off with though if you’re new to the collection.

I bought “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, “The Return of Sherlok Holmes”, “The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes”,”The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes”,”The Sign of Four” in the “World’s Classics” edition.
I love Worlds Classics. On the books cover, there are beautiful pictures by Frederic Door Steele, originally drawn for Collier’s Weekly. Inside, we find, first, a very interesting introduction by Richard Lancelyn Green, Christopher Roden,or W.W. Robson, then a chronology of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and best of all A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY, very useful for those who wish to go further and study Doyle’s work more profoundly. This bibliography itself would be enough to make me buy World’s Classics. Moreover, there is plenty of very interesting explanatory notes which inform us of… everything . The explanatory notes of “The Empty House” for instance, tell us where the name “Ronald Adair” may come from, what is “The Baldwin Cards Club” or “an expanding revolver bullet”, who wrote “The Holy War” or used Sherlock Holmes’ ghost in stories, what is precisely bartitsu, and I could go on for long…..You may think I’m hooked on Holmes’ stories. Yes, I am, mostly thanks to Jeremy Brett’s interpretation of the Great Detective in the successful Granada series. Yet, he was never granted an Award. If you wish to see him awarded a posthumous Bafta, have a look to Facebook at ” a Posthumous Bafta for Jeremy Brett”; whether you are convinced or not you won’t regret it, there are a lot of beautiful photographs.

Conan Doyle brings Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson into such interesting situations which makes fascinating reading to keep us guessing every which way. Highly recommend to anyone needing to exercise their brain.

Derek Jacobi makes these somewhat flimsy stories a pleasure to listen to. A good selection of stories, read by a great actor.

As a fan of Holmes and Wotson this book is great, as if written in his own hand. Love it all

I forgot to check the size of this version, (Macmillan Collector’s), and was initially disappointed with the small size – it’s about A5. However, the paper and cover, (hardback), quality were very good, the gilt page edges and blue ribbon marker a pleasant surprise. The font wasn’t too small, (I do need glasses for reading), and overall I”m now sold on the Macmillan Collector’s Library concept. I’ve no comments to make on the content – I’ve read the stories before and this was just a re-read – and all books contents can be independently reviewed on a number of sites elsewhere. But when ordering online, and especially as there are so many different publisher versions of the same book, it seems that the most difficult thing is to gauge the production quality.

Great compilation. If any criticism; the print is a bit small for my poor eyesight
