A secret romance was just the start of the story…

Tucked into a crook of the Norfolk coast lies Nelson’s Bar – an idyllic village where time seems to stand still. Maddy Cracey has called this beautiful spot home all her life, as had her husband Adey – until an epic row sent him storming out into a blizzard, with no sign of him since that fateful night.

Six years on, and Maddy’s life in the village has settled into a gentle pattern with her young daughter and Great Aunt Ruthie. However, when handsome stranger Raff turns up with a handful of long-forgotten love letters, their quiet life is upended as family secrets from the past are unearthed.

As Raff and Maddy get to know each other, they grow closer and a love story of their own seems inevitable. But when Maddy receives a mysterious message, she can’t help but wonder whether her own past is as distant as she’d thought it was…

The festive new novel about love, family and the power of words from Sunday Times bestseller Sue Moorcroft, perfect for fans of Sarah Morgan and Phillipa Ashley.

I simply love Christmas and therefore also love reading Christmas books so I was excited to see Sue had written a new Christmas story. It was a really nice and heartwarming story with some lovely characters.

I was especially touched by Ruthie’s story. For the majority of the book I felt more invested and moved by her story than I did by Maddy’s. That’s not to say that I did not like Maddy, because I did and I loved her little daughter. She made me smile a lot! Maddy was a super strong character just getting on with life and caring for both her Aunt Ruthie and her daughter.

What had happened to Maddy’s husband remained a mystery that after 7 years had still not been solved but now something seemed to be changing. I couldn’t get through the story fast enough to get to the bottom of what had happened to him and how this would affect the relationship that had sort of started between Maddy and Raff. The story was very different from what I had expected, but I still really enjoyed it and I loved the epilogue.

I have been a fan of Sue and her work for a while now. I have read and loved all of her books. As soon as I finish reading one of her books, I immediately look forward to her next book. Sue’s most recent release is called ‘The Christmas Love Letters’ and it was released on 26th October 2023. It’s another cracker from Sue Moorcroft. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Christmas Love Letters’ but more about that in a bit.

Whenever I pick up one of Sue’s books, I know that I am a guaranteed a fantastic read, which will be nigh on impossible to put down. ‘The Christmas Love Letters’ is no exception. I started reading and didn’t stop for a good couple of hours. I was blown away by the emotional story and by the characters. My copy of the book wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. The more of the story that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. This was one of those books that I had mixed feelings about finishing. Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t disappointed with how the story ended, because that couldn’t be further from the truth, but I was enjoying the story, the characters and the author’s writing style so much that I just didn’t want the book to end. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘The Christmas Love Letters’. I found ‘The Christmas Love Letters’ to be a delight to read from start to finish and left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

‘The Christmas Love Letters’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Sue Moorcroft. Sue has an easygoing writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading one of Sue’s books often feels more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book. I hope that makes sense. Sue’s love for her characters shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. I ended up feeling as though the characters were friends of mine. I was so in tune with the characters that I went through every emotion that the characters went through. I love the way in which Sue makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That’s how I felt anyway.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Christmas Love Letters’ and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Sue’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Sue Moorcroft is the absolute queen of fabulous Christmas stories and this one is utterly perfect! It has everything you want in a seasonal tale and I found it emotional, moving and totally satisfying. Really didn’t want it to end!
Maddy Cracey lives in a tiny village on the Norfolk coast and her life should be idyllic, but seven years ago her husband walked out on her after a massive row and never returned, disappearing without a trace. She’s lived in limbo ever since, raising the daughter he didn’t know was on the way, and caring for her elderly great-aunt Ruthie. When handsome stranger Raff’s visit reveals deep secrets from Ruthie’s past, Maddy’s life is turned upside down, but will it be for good or bad? I very much enjoyed finding out!

Sue’s books just get better and better!

The Christmas Love Letters is in my mind her best yet.

Maddy lives in the small community of Nelson’s Bar, along with her daughter and Great Aunt Ruth. It has taken some time for Maddy to put the pieces of her life together again, after the disappearance of her husband Adey seven years ago. And some in the small Norfolk town still eye Maddy with suspicion, since no trace has been found of him since.

Then one day, a stranger knocks at the door, and secrets from the past come crashing into Maddy’s world.

The day Ffion discovers a pile of letters while sorting out her father’s effects, is the day her world, and that of her brother Raff and daughter Chloe change irrevocably.

But is it for the better?

This story brings together both worlds, and the impact those letters from the past has on the present.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Christmas Love Letters and recommend it.

Love a good Christmas book and this a good Christmas book. Read over a couple of days and although the ending is predictable, it’s Christmas so what’s not to love. Sit back and enjoy.

Another enjoyable book from Sue Moorcroft. I like that her stories have something a bit different in them. But ILU for I love you – Sue says that not many people would know what it meant? Really? Doesn’t everyone use it? It’s standard text-speak and is even in Collins dictionary and on Wikipaedia!

I love a competent heroine. I’m a bit over ditsy, cupcake-baking girls and in Maddy we have a woman many of us recognise- or indeed are. She’s juggling single parenthood with caring for an elderly relative, all while coping with a missing husband and financial stresses. She deserves a bit of love! Enter Raff, author and all round good guy who is researching his family history and brings dark secrets from the past with him. Torn between family loyalties and longing for love, these two keep us guessing till the very end. I loved the Christmas themes but in Sue Moorcroft’s competent hands, the sweetness is perfectly balanced and like a good Christmas cake, is never overdone. Delicious.
