My day job is spent helping organizations improve their ways of working – something I’ve been doing for almost 3 decades and I’ve experienced quite a few different eras of change – from simply optimizing existing processes, to iterative development, to agile, to scaled agile and, finally, DevOps. I’ve known for quite some time that a) the next evolution of best practice would be focused on cloud, that b) any publication of relevance would need to focus on practice (i.e. case studies) over theory and that c) any publication worth its salt would provide a framework to help the uninitiated understand the various dimensions of cloud – especially in terms of its adoption and for organizations looking to transform. There would also need to be a focus on people, as well as process and technology. I’m pleased to say that this publication fits the bill on all fronts and, surprisingly given the broad scope, is a very easy read and certainly one I’ll be recommending to both executives and practitioners alike. The various dimensions discussed speak for themselves and each is treated as an “entry point” to cloud adoption. These entry points are discussed in terms of “dimensions” that include Culture and Organization, Architecture and Technology, Security and Compliance, Emerging Innovation Spaces, Methodology (agile/devops), Service Management and Operations, and Governance. In summary, this book should be considered an essential primer for any organization looking to move to the cloud.
