From the back cover:
‘Bilbo Baggins enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep to whisk him away on a journey to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon…’
Who could not be lured into the depths by that, especially this extra special hardback edition?
Measuring around 18 cm x 24 cm x 3 cm, the pale green cloth-like cover has a subtle touch of gold colouring to the front & spine that mischievously glints in the change of light. It opens to dark green inside cover pages followed by 376 with a light sheen finish, punctuated with around 150 colour illustrations, by Jemima Catlin, some of which are full page.
A forever copy for me & mine.

Super book; nice size and weighty and was really looking forward to enjoying the illustrations. How disappointing that all the pictures are so dark! Why did the illustrator use so much black and dark colours. Has removed all magic from the story. What a shame.

Great as a gift for first time reader of the hobbit
by Reddy
This edition is great for young readers with its attractive & colourful illustrations accompanying the text. Very enjoyable for adults reading to children too. The quality of the artwork, paper & textured cover are all excellent & it makes a lovely gift.

The Hobbit – Hardcover (Green) illustrates by Jemima Caitlin.
This is a fantastic looking book, littered with colour illustrations on most pages. The pages are thick, white with a faint sheen.
The illustrations are not as “mature” as those by Alan Lee, but I find reading the Hobbit easier than LOTR and therefore the younger artwork more suitable. The story itself has been reviewed many times but for me, I tried reading LOTR many years ago when the movies were released and struggled to persevere with them – accordingly I never bothered with the hobbit.
As a soon be father I have spent a lot of time looking for illustrated novels and books and whilst I recognise that this is one for later down the line, it looked just what I wanted so bought it lest I forget to in years to come. When it arrived it was such a pleasure to see and hold that I begun to read and have not stopped since.
If you are looking for a easy to read adventure with lots of illustrations – something with more depth than a graphic novel but not too thorough for young readers, this is it.
I highly recommend this hardcover version and wish there were more illustrated novels like this.
10/10.
