Terry Pratchett is undoubtedly a literary genius, but one who writes books that are accessible and unpretentious. The Colour of Magic is written with such humour and style that it is not only difficult not to turn the page but also difficult not to go on to buy every book in the Discworld series. The inept wizzard (extra “z” intentional”) Rincewind is a compelling protagonist, for his cowardice is directly proportional to his ability to survive. The other characters are also larger than life yet somehow very believable, and Pratchett paints them sometimes with subtlety but often by broad brush strokes that gel seamlessly into the wider plot to produce a masterpiece that boggles the mind. The Light Fantastic continues the series excellently; you will read both without putting this book down.

This book is an excellent way to get acquinted with the discworld: a hilarious story with good illustrations. The first illustration on the inside-cover of the book is the best showing a little imp in a picture box (camera) painting the horrible “eater of souls” out of the story. The other illustrations show the pictures as painted by the little imp: even thought they are nog as pretty as the first picture, it actually works as the imp has to paint incredibly fast.
