One brave woman will risk her life to save innocent Jewish children in occupied Paris.

Paris, 1942. During the dark days of Nazi occupation, Adele Basset continues to teach in her dance studio, providing a beacon of light and hope amongst so much terror and suffering.

When the Germans demand the names of her Jewish students, Adele realises they are in terrible danger. Only she can save them.

Hiding her Jewish pupils in the school attic, Adele puts her life on the line to keep them safe.

As the war rages, keeping her secret becomes more and more dangerous. Adele starts to question who she can trust and just how far she will need to go to protect the innocent children in her care.

She must find a way for them to escape, if they have a chance of making it out of Paris alive…

An absolutely heart-breaking and unforgettable novel about the strength of the human spirit and the courage of ordinary people in the darkest days of war. Fans of The Lost Girls of Paris, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Rose Code will be hooked from the very first page.

Most of the story is set in 1942. It’s realistic enough to keep your attention especially given some of the extraordinary real stories from the second world war.
The characters are likeable, believable and the author seems to understand life in ww2 Paris.

What lets it down is the modern story. Much of it is filler and can be skimmed. It features a dull romance between a tortured young woman who is afraid to love and the French man looking for some missing ww2 artwork.

The last few chapters of the modern story are worth reading. The rest just skim for context especially if romance novels not your taste.

I adored this dual timeline novel as I have all of Suzanne Fortin’s previous books.
Adele is a French dance teacher in the middle of World War II where the Nazis are trying to stamp their power in Europe. I love how Suzanne Fortin captures the atmosphere so perfectly, depicting the everyday characters trapped in the midst of war and tugging on the reader’s heartstrings. Adele was my favourite character showing strength and resilience during everything she had to face. In present day, Fleur is helping her grandmother with old memories that are set to reveal many secrets.
A page turning novel that will stay with me. For fans of Andie Newton and Lizzie Lane.

I became very ingrossed in this well written novel. I finished it just as I was about to watch the Service for Armistice Sunday and so it made it all the more poignant.
Terribly, terribly sad but, wonderful too as we see and remember that humans are capable of unconditional love and kindness. Well worth reading.

I never read the blurb on books, preferring to discover the book myself, so I thought this would be a gentle stroll through Paris reminding me of one of my favourite cities. I was wrong – this is so much more.

A tale of history, romance, intrigue, heartbreak , horror & sadness but also of hope.

#SuzanneFortin is a highly talented author. She draws you in and you live the journey. Found myself holding my breath in parts for fear would-be escapees would be discovered.

This leaves me with thank you #SuzanneFortin for this fabulous read

A very emotional story that is likely to be very close to some actual events. The story of the lead characters is cleverly woven.
