The Devil Rides Out: Wickedly funny and painfully honest stories from Paul O’Grady

Birkenhead, 1973. The eighteen-year-old Paul O’Grady gets ready for a big Saturday night out on the town. New white T-shirt, freshly ironed jeans, looking good. As he bids farewell to his mum, who’s on the phone to his auntie, and wanders off down the street in a cloud of aftershave, he hears her familiar cry: ‘Oh, the devil rides out tonight, Annie. The devil rides out!’

The further adventures of Paul O’Grady – following on from the million-copy-selling At My Mother’s Knee – are, if anything, even more hilarious and outrageous than what has come before. To say that The Devil Rides Out is action-packed is an understatement. Its extraordinary cast of characters includes lords and ladies, the legendary Vera, a serial killer, more prostitutes than you can shake a stick at and drag queens of every shape and size. Wickedly funny, often moving, and searingly honest, Paul’s tales of the unexpected will make your jaw drop and your hair stand on end. And you’ll laugh like a drain. The Devil Rides Out is one hell of a read!

I bought this for my partner as she is a big Paul O’ Grady fan. I bought her the first part of his autobiography ” On My Mother’s Knees” which she enjoyed and she is finding this one just as enjoyable

This is the second installment in Paul’s quartet of autobiographies, I read the first installment earlier in the year and didn’t really enjoy it but I’d already purchased the second book on a Kindle daily deal so I was committed to reading it. I have to say I preferred this book to the first, Paul’s voice once again shines through in the text and the focus in this installment is more on Paul rather than his friends and family members and it follows Paul’s life from the age of 18 to 23 and covers him becoming a Father, numerous jobs and his first steps in to the spotlight as Lily Savage.

I have to start this review by saying that I love Paul on the television, he comes across as warm, compassionate and in my opinion hilariously funny but I don’t feel this translates to the book, maybe these are qualities he developed as he grew older but the Paul in this book doesn’t always come across as very nice and is often selfish. However, there are glimpses of his caring side developing when he was working in care roles in the children’s home and as a peripatetic carer. These were the sections of the books I liked reading about the most as I felt it was a turning point in Paul’s life where he seemed to be maturing and the care that he showed the children was lovely to read about.

It could never be said that this book isn’t honest, Paul writes his truth both the good and the bad, he talks of his reservations about becoming a Father and his difficulties in the early days of his Daughter’s life bonding with her and adapting to his new role. This book is a little more inward facing than the first and Paul does tend to focus more on himself which I preferred.

Some reviewers have criticised that the book only covers a small portion of time approximately the ages of 18-23 but I have to say that I didn’t really notice this as there were so many different jobs, characters and situations within these 5 years that the book never felt dragged out.

I haven’t rated it higher because whilst it was an easy read, it didn’t grip me, I was reading to finish the book rather than because I was enjoying it and it hasn’t made me want to read book 3 or 4.

Incredible life, honest about what he has done and sometimes it was something he shouldn’t! Hilarious to read and it is so awful knowing I have read it after his untimely death.
