This book will appeal to any medical thriller fans. I loved the medical setting which seemed authentic and although the first half of the book dragged a little, when I began to engage with the well written characters the story speeded up for me.
Dr Alison Wilson has moved to Saint Margarets a small seaside hospital from London as the new medical director. She has been tasked to improve the hospitals performance which has been plagued by poor performance and unexplained deaths . Alison faces so many obstacles as she is seems as the newcomer who can’t be trusted both in the hospital and the local community who all seem to know each other’s lives and business.
There are numerous shifty characters and I expected suspected each of them and turn. This added to the enjoyment for me and I I was not surprised that I had found the guilty party halfway through the book, I couldn’t wait until the culprit would be exposed and I was correct. I admired Alison’s character so much , she never gave up even when faced with surmountable obstacles, always putting the patients first.
This book oozes mystery and suspense but maybe it’s not the best choice if you’re going into hospital in the near future.

“The Doctor” is a gripping thriller, perfect for an enjoyable holiday read. The main character faces numerous challenges when she takes a job in a new hospital, leaving London and a cheating partner behind. Her long to-do list of improvements to raise the standing of the hospital reveals concerning activities, and someone who doesn’t want her to succeed in her endeavours. Highly recommended, a must-read.

I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This medical crime thriller follows Alison Wilson as she starts a new job at Saint Margaret’s hospital as a medical officer.
With the hostility she faces from some the staff straight from the start, it takes her a while to settle into her new role. When her reports start to be tampered with, she starts to think that someone may not want her around at the hospital.
Soon the hostility towards her escalates, and when she uncovers some deadly secrets at the hospital, she must fight to save her job and maybe even her life.
Who wants Alison out of the hospital? What secrets are being hidden?
This medical crime thriller is a suspense filled read, especially as the threats and hostility towards Alison increases. It seems she doesn’t know who she can trust.
I liked that she finds some comfort in a new acquaintance she comes to meet in the storyline, it adds a little bit of hope that things will work out for Alison.
Alison is a strong female character which I always like to see when reading, as even with a past she is determined not to let others get the better of her.
Overall, a suspense filled medical crime thriller, where the secrets of a hospital are revealed.

I rarely get chance to read these days but when I do I love a book that you can’t put down and ‘The Doctor’ did not disappoint. Each page made you want to read on as the suspense built up wanting you to reveal the culprit. Would highly recommend.

The Doctor is a gripping mystery drama set in a hospital. The main character, Alison, has been appointed as Medical Director and is looking forward to the challenge. Before too long, she finds that things start to go wrong for her and it appears that someone is out to sabotage her plans for improvement.
The plot is skilfully developed and introduces several red herrings. Although this is an enjoyable read, I feel it could have had a bit more tension.
My thanks to the author, the publishers and Netgalley for the chance to read and review.

I enjoyed The Doctor, I read through most of it in one go, but towards the end I felt it lost me a little, but that didn’t detract from the fact it was a good read.

Thank you NetGalley and Avon for aopy of The Doctor by Annie Payne.
After resigning from her job in London due to her husband having an affair Doctor Alison Wilson takes up a job as a local hospital in the beach town of Wayleigh as a Medical director for a Stroke unit. It’s a fresh start for her and she can’t wait to get started but things don’t go to plan. When going through the paperwork she finds out that there is drugs going missing and a high rate of fatalities. Some deaths due to dodgy equipment and someone at the hospital wants her gone. Not only that the local people take an instant dislike to her, and she hasn’t even done anything. Which she finds out that it has got to do with her predecessor Doctor Atkinson.
Thank you, Avon, and NetGalley for a copy of ‘The Doctor’. I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, this has an intriguing storyline and a great start for a debut author. But, I found a bit unrealistic at times due to the main characters excessive drinking habits and then seemed to her job effectively. But I would like to see how this author writing develops. 3.5 stars from me.
