***THE BIGGEST GRISHAM IN OVER A DECADE***
The Exchange is John Grisham’s epic follow-up to his phenomenal global bestseller The Firm, the novel that launched his career as the world’s favourite storyteller – it will take you on a rollercoaster journey across the globe, from New York to London, and Rome to Marrakech.
TEN DAYS TO SAVE A LIFE. ONE SECOND TO END IT.
Mitch McDeere has cheated death and come out the other side. Fifteen years ago, he stole $10 million from the mob and disappeared. Now, with his enemies jailed or dead, he has fought his way to the top of the biggest law firm in the world.
When a new case takes Mitch to Libya, danger awaits: he’s soon in the biggest hostage negotiation in recent history with terrorists who have murdered and will murder again. Their demand is staggering: a ransom of $100 million must be paid within 10 days.
But this isn’t a random kidnapping – it’s personal. And no one, not even Mitch’s wife in New York, is safe.
With the clock ticking, can Mitch stay one step ahead of his enemies?
This time, there’s nowhere to hide.

Of course being a Grisham creation and a follow on from The Firm it has to be a good read. If you’ve seen the movie of The Firm then it will be Tom Cruise whose physical being will inhabit the character in the story. Superb book.

Strange that this is heralded as printed in 2023 as in the story Gadaffi is still alive…?!! A re-release, I presume

I re-read The Firm prior to reading The Exchange and was really looking forward to the follow up story. I needn’t have bothered as the only connection are the two main characters. Both stories are completely different and I found The Exchange to be hugely disappointing. As far as I’m concerned Grisham fails to properly deal with the fact that at the end of The Firm Mitch McDeere is on the run from ‘the mob’ and, instead, allows him to slip seamlessly back into his former career. Sloppy and lazy writing! I also noticed that some character names had been changed slightly to fit changes made for the film of The Firm – not important to the overall story but still an indication of a lack of attention to detail. I won’t be in such a rush to spend my money on a further book in this series.

The Grisham launch is my annual treat. Sad to say this is his weakest book and not a patch on The Firm. I don’t think he needed to revisit Mitch McDeere, this was slow moving and is missing the cleverness and twists of the origional.

I can thoroughly recommend The Exchange and had difficulty putting it down. Usual Grisham well written style and kept you wanting to know what the outcome would be. Thank you John Grisham.

The second in what is probably the Mitch McDeere trilogy. Not really much legal stuff in here, more of the life’s of the McDeere couple, with a couple of kids thrown in. I suspect while it was a reasonably good adventure story, it was short on the courtroom and legal battling and heavy on a touristy set of descriptions of various places around Europe and the North African continent. It’s left open enough for the adventures of the McDeere family part 3. Give it about 5 years so to create and refine. I will probably buy it just because it’s a Grisham.

I have read all Grisham’s books and this is one of the best. And you do not have to read “The Firm” in order to enjoy it.
I notice that the reviews are slightly less favourable than usual. For me it got better and better the more I read. I did not have to know who “the terrorists” were. There was more than enough information about how the ransom money was finally found (almost) and I enjoyed both the geographic info and the high life of the large firm lawyers,
However, most of all I enjoy Grisham’s writing style. Even in serious situations he manages to add a bit of humour. It’s done subtly, sometimes almost as an afterthought, but makes me laugh out loud. Especially his descriptions of “very important people” (often rather boring and self-important ones…)
So, I truly recommend and if there is a third book about this adventurous couple, I’m looking very much forward to more sleepless nights.

The problem I am told me that Grisham only writes about lawyers. This may be true, but he has a totally differentiator each time. Muslim question is where does he go next. This was a wonderful story, the expense in researching the town’s and islands must have been very high a year to wait for the next one
