So impressed by the contents, bought a second copy for my grandson.
by Paul Riley
I bought the book as a gift for my Cousin who has recently bought herself a piano, she was classically trained but life and work caused a long lapse in playing, So now she re-learning how to play, She’s looking forward to playing all of these tunes and as she’s joined a choir she’ll be singing along as well, I can only hope to go deaf. lol
For anyone who enjoys playing the piano this book is worth the wait to receive it, it’s packed with classic and modern Christmas songs and the pleasure it gave her is worth the cost.

I was impressed by the book construction quality, thick pages and front/back cover, almost like hardcover, not your usual flimsy and fragile cover. Concerning the music itself, I was also impressed by the vast selection of pieces, there are dozens of famous Christmas tunes here and nicely arranged too. The only downside is it doesn’t lay flat so easily. It’s also important to say the difficulty level it’s probably around 5th grade. All I expected and more! 🙂

This book contains a nice selection of Christmas songs, which are arranged for the intermediate player. But the book contains no lyrics!!! If I had known this, I definitely would not have bought this book. I did not understand that “solo piano” means “without lyrics”.
What does one do with a collection of Christmas songs without lyrics? Nothing! Christmas songs are not just background music; an essential part of Christmas celebration is the joy of singing together!

I wish this book had been spiral bound. Difficult to keep open.

Brilliant for easy going Christmas songs to be learnt and played for yourself and for an audience.

I should have taken note of more of the negative comments before taking the plunge and purchasing this and ignored the couple of piano teacher’s enthusiastic endorsements! (Did they do the arrangements??) But for inexplicable reasons the only Carol/Christmas music seemingly available is either ‘easy piano’ or a mixture of guitar and piano and this one seemed to be the only other available.
Let’s look at this Anthology objectively:
1) On the face of it, this is a lovely selection of Christmas music
2) It is at a prominently Grade 5/6 level of difficulty so has a satisfyingly ‘full’ sound to the music
3) The arrangements are, by and large, AWEFUL! Virtually every piece totally looses the theme of the music after an initial reasonably recognisable introduction and deviates into a flurry of ‘interpretations’ usually an octave higher that the introduction. Even the introductions are often laced with discord’s! What is worse is that these ‘octave high’ deviations are not written on the staves with an ‘8’ indicated above, which are easy to interpret, but are written above the standard staves making interpretation much more difficult than it needed to be.
4) Other reviewers comments regarding the weight of the paper (excellent) and the clarity of the printing (also excellent) are absolutely correct as is the thickness and inflexibility of the binding making a substantial and robust music holder essential to hold the pages open, wherever you open the book as it is very inflexible and heavy.
So, as I said in my headline: a curate’s egg. Had I had the opportunity to examine this book before purchasing, I would definitely NOT have bought it: which is a huge shame as the Anthology hold great promise, but unless you like your Christmas music ‘jazzed up’ and barely recognisable, this is a book to AVOID at all costs!

Great book! It is quite thick, but the spine bends easily and thus stayed open even on my small piano book holder. I would say those at grade 5 standard would be able to play these songs easily enough (if they are good sight-readers), but it is not for beginners. My only issue is that lots of songs sound good in the first half and then something random seems to be going on after and the notes don’t fit rest of song? This was the case with Do they Know it’s Christmas? And All I want For Christmas Is You. Still, a nice book.
