Well written thriller full of suspense and twists and turns. Well written plausible characters. Impossible to predict what was going to happen next which made it an especially good and enjoyable read.

This book started off fine – the prose initially engaging. However, it had an OTT sentence at the end of most chapters, in the vein of ‘but all was not as it seemed’ or ‘things would take a terrible turn’ (I am paraphrasing but it was that sort of over-statement that grated after the first few).
The story included everything – various crimes and instances of misfortune all befalling the same family in a quiet farming community. Unfortunately, for me, it became a little silly. Added to that was the approach of jumping back and forth, and between different character narratives, which felt messy. This plot device works well when applied with a limited number of main characters but in this case felt overdone. It also failed to make me feel engaged with one single character.

Although enjoyable, it’s padded out with so many irrelevant parts that i sometimes skipped a few pages I thought were unnecessarily boring padding. Especially just after reading Seven Ways to start a fire which was an excellent first book by Rachel Mahood.

Well worth reading, the beginning takes a little while to get into it but you’ll fly through the last few hundred pages, very interesting twists towards the end
