LONDON. Early morning, June 2019: on the foreshore of the river Thames, a bag of bones is discovered. Human bones.

DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene and quickly sends the bag for forensic examination. The bones are those of a young woman, killed by a blow to the head many years ago.

Also inside the bag is a trail of clues, in particular the seeds of a rare tree which lead DCI Owusu back to a mansion in Chelsea where, nearly thirty years previously, three people lay dead in a kitchen, and a baby waited upstairs for someone to pick her up.

The clues point forward too to a brother and sister in Chicago searching for the only person who can make sense of their pasts.

Four deaths. An unsolved mystery. A family whose secrets can’t stay buried for ever . . .

The story involves multiple characters many of whom are similar which makes for a very confusing read. Too much champagne, conspicuous wealth, and horrible rich people. Everyone seems messed up but they all have millions so no worries!! Everyone is instantly forgettable and as the hunt for Phin/ Finn progresses all the near misses just become annoying. I thought there might be a twist at the end but not really.

I have just read the family upstairs and the family remains back to back. What a thrilling read! Very dark and warped but interesting and beautifully written. The story twists and turns and it satisfyingly and thoroughly explained, and it’s not what you were expecting….

I read The Family Upstairs in February and I loved it, it was probably one of my favourites from Lisa Jewell so far, so it’s safe to say I was excited about this sequel, and it definitely did not disappoint. It answered questions I didn’t even know I had!

I initially thought I may be overwhelmed by the alternating points of view, but I wasn’t at all. We mainly hear from Henry, Lucy, Rachel and DI Samuel Owusu, who is investigating the remains of a young woman that have been found in the River Thames. The bag of bones that has been found leads DI Owusu to a mansion in Chelsea where, as we know, very disturbing things happened to a forever bonded group of people.

I loved the journey that the plot took. I thought it was very clever, and I especially liked seeing Rachel’s relationship with Michael being portrayed, and us being able to see how that linked into Lucy’s story. Both Rachel and Lucy are very strong female characters who I enjoyed reading about.

I also liked how we got to see more of Henry’s true personality, and discover how obsessive he really is. Despite him not being massively likeable, I still really felt for him because his childhood and adolescence must have been utter hell, so is it any wonder he has turned into the complex person he is today?

I don’t want to say too much more as I don’t want to spoil the plot, but I was completely enthralled by this story. It was a compelling, dark, twisty, intriguing page turner that I didn’t want to end. I feel sad to say goodbye to this cast of characters, because as dysfunctional as they are, they make for SUCH good reading! ????

I really enjoyed all three books . The third was gripping – but it raced through Phins character which could and should have been so much more . Henry had gone through so much as a child – and I thought at the end he came out as the strongest – but the last line
Felt to me that he was still just as insecure which was such a shame – disappointing ending for Henry for me, I thought a more in depth conversation between Phin/Henry would have made it more realistic .hopefully it’s another sequel ? And it’s feels to me it is unfinished .

The author’s reading style flows well and pulls the reader into the story effortlessly. The plot answers all unanswered questions to a satisfactory conclusion
