The Fitting Book

Think of the moment you wear an outfit you have sewn for the first time. Think of how happy, proud, and accomplished you feel, all because it fits and you love it.

Many women struggle with the standard sizing of commercial or indie sewing patterns, which often leads to fitting issues. This garment fitting guide will help you adjust sewing patterns to achieve the perfect fit you desire.

This fitting book has visual sketches and links to videos to help during each step of the 3-part fitting process.
Here’s How it Works:
A) Identify the Fitting Issue.
B) Pin, Cut, & Tape the Fitting Sample.
C) Correct the Sewing Pattern.

The Fitting Book covers the following categories for pattern alterations:

  • Full Bust Adjustments (FBA) – bodice alterations for princess seams, darts, no darts
  • Small Bust Adjustments (SBA) – bodice alterations for princess seams, darts, no darts
  • Armscye and sleeve alterations
  • Front width, back and shoulder pattern adjustments
  • Neckline pattern corrections
  • Basic skirt pattern alterations
  • Dress alterations – Top/bodice adjustments and skirts
  • Fitting pants – this is my specialty and what I am known for in the industry
  • Demystifying draglines (my secret to understanding diagonal draglines in garment fitting)

You will learn about terminology, abbreviations, pattern tools, and patternmaking supplies. The Fitting Book shows how to use a hip curve, a French curve, and a clear ruler for patternmaking. The pattern corrections can be applied to womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, knit styles, and woven styles. The sketches and photos are in black and white. This is a fitting book primarily with sketches. It is not a pattern drafting book. Finally, you will learn about the customization scale in garment fitting and patternmaking.

I share my knowledge from fitting tens of thousands of garments while working in the garment industry since 2003. You will learn industry-expert fitting tips to achieve the customized fit you desire.

If you are one of my 58,000+ followers on Instagram and Facebook, you may have seen my short fitting videos. For all the fitting alterations in this book, there are corresponding simple videos to reference. There are QR codes that can be scanned with a smartphone which direct you to each fitting correction. The videos give you a quick visual of how to do each correction, so you never get stuck.

Stop wasting your time and money sewing clothes that don’t fit well.

It’s time to sew the clothes you love that fit.

5 Reviews For This Product

I give this book 5 stars but am writing this review In response to a 2 star review that caught my eye when purchasing this book. I feel it’s important to address reviews that don’t benefit the sewing community or fashion industry. While I believe this book deserves 5 stars I wanted to address the issues that were brought up by the 2-star reviewer.

Having read this book, the author does not claim that her method is better than all others, but with her experience, she is showing how her method differs from others in order to get the best fit, which surely we are all after, and she emphasizes trying various methods to find which works best. Again something that makes a lot of sense to me.

I found it very impressive that the author shares a completely NEW fitting method for correcting diagonal draglines (which I have issues with as I’m tall) and I would trademark this too if I had come up the idea myself! The last chapter was completely eye opening for me and has changed how I fit garments. I have not found this in other fitting books.

The 2-star reviewer claimed the book lacked body measurement information. I’m not sure what they are referring to as I found it covers all the main body measurements needed to determine the size of the pattern, Including the shoulder width, sleeve cap height and width, and above bust measurement.
I also love the basic sketches in the book because they highlight fitting issues without having distracting design elements.

I truly appreciate the author’s 20+ years of industry knowledge shared in this book. Having followed her a long time on social media, I was not disappointed with the content of this book.

Are you one who values books like me? I never trust a review that complains about the price, education empowers people and this book has truly opened my mind.

It’s a great book that simply breaks down how to alter self drafted and commercial patterns and the fit of garments. It also has accompanying videos accessed by qr code. There are even images of how to place pattern rulers to create shapes which has been useful and I’m looking forward to working through the book.

I have made my own clothes since I was 10, I am now of State Pension age. As my body changed over the years and most patterns stuck to their hour glass model of the average woman’s shape I found sewing produced disappointing results. The invention of the Internet allowed access to help guides and videos which did provide answers to several of my fit issues. There is a downside though, you have to know the technical term for your problem and then keep pressing ‘pause’ on the video or constantly refreshing the computer screen. I get a weekly newsletter from ClothSpot an on-line fabric shop based in the UK. Each week they recommend a book, usually a novel. A couple of weeks ago this book was featured. I decided to check it out on Amazon. Over the last 10 years I have bought several sewing books and have been disappointed with the majority of them. Many remain unused. The size range of their patterns is limited, a lot of them you have to download, and many lack a guide on ‘how to perfect’ their pattern to fit your body. I stopped buying books when the enclosed patterns just didn’t suit me – most were too young in style. Having checked out this book I decided to order it. Following its arrival I spent the evening reading it, not something normal for me with ‘how to’ type books. I most certainly haven’t regretted my purchase. The quality of the diagrams, the ‘pace’ of the descriptions – you don’t go from Step 1 – cut out your fabric to Final Step – sew your hem, in three steps – and the range of issues covered is considerable. I have so many post-it tabs now to highlight various possible fixes for my patterns. For example, I have made the same tee shirt pattern for a couple of years finding the end result to be okay. Before I started making another tee shirt a couple of weeks ago I checked the section based on wide shoulders, something I have. My pattern and my body shoulder measurements didn’t match. Following the guidelines from page 87 onwards I started to alter my pattern (I trace my patterns from the original so I always have a ‘perfect’ copy to refer back to if things go array). I adjusted my pattern by under a cm but the difference to the fit of the finished garment is considerable. Do not worry if you haven’t been sewing for long or that you might not understand the instructions, this book is useful for beginners as well as experienced stitchers.
