The Forgotten Farmhouse by the Sea: An emotional and uplifting tale of secrets and second chances (Welcome to Anglesey)

£1.90

‘One of my favourite reads of 2023… you just have to read it. Absolutely brilliant.’ Reader review, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

When a ramshackle cliffside farmhouse comes on the market on the island of Anglesey, Nan Green is determined to make it the family home of her dreams. After convincing her reluctant husband Robin to make the move, Nan sets out to restore the tumbledown house to its former glory, just like she remembers it from childhood holidays on the island.

As she settles into coastal life, Nan learns that her new home comes with a secret past that’s somehow connected to her mother, who won’t even step across the threshold and refuses to explain why. At the same time, Robin grows ever more distant, working away for weeks at a time, leaving her to care for their twin girls alone.

Devoting all her energy to transforming the old house, Nan’s wounds gradually start to heal, new friendships grow, and family secrets are set free. Soon Nan learns that her dream was about more than a perfect home by the sea. It was about finding out how to finally be happy…

Fans of Susanne O’Leary, Amanda Prowse, Liz Eeles and Sheila O’Flanagan will adore The Forgotten Farmhouse by the Sea.

Just the kind of book I love to curl up in my armchair and devour over a rainy weekend! This tale of Nan’s dream of an Anglesey home coming true and all that transpires really captured my heart. I got lost in the vivid descriptions of the beautiful Anglesey coastline, and felt held in a Welsh world full of stories and families and history. I got completely caught up in Nan’s world, and found myself unable to put this down as I was determined to find out why Nan’s mother Eira, felt the way she did about Coed Uchaf, Nan’s new home, what had happened in Nan’s past, what was going to become of all of Nan’s relationships, with her husband, and her new friends, and where did they conflict? I won’t write any spoilers but would definitely recommend a good box of biscuits and a running supply of cups of tea – you won’t want to put this one down!

I really enjoyed reading this book, I know Anglesey and it brought the island to life, referencing real places and characteristics of the island. The main character Nan is easily empathised with and as the story unfolds you see her real strength emerging. Once started I read it over 3/4 nights, can’t wait for the next one!

At first Nan frustrated me until it was revealed just what a sad childhood she had and how mean her husband ‘s parents were then thrilled at how strong she became coping on her own with the family so a feel good read

I read a massive amount of books. This one is outstanding. I, like the author, adore the island of Anglesey so I was really hoping that the book would do it justice. It surpassed my expectations. The storyline is lovely, a tale of overcoming fears, hardship and a difficult past. I highly recommend it but be prepared to shelve any other plans whilst you are reading this book.

I found myself reading late into the night as I followed Nan’s story, from her move to Anglesey, her struggles with loneliness and self-doubt, and her growth into friendship and a resolution of hurts of the past. The author’s love of the island sings through this novel, and Nan’s journey towards healing is deeply rooted in the landscape she has chosen to settle in. A beautiful, compassionate and keenly observed exploration of one woman’s coming to terms with past hurts and learning about her own strength. Highly recommended!
