The Forgotten Tudor Royal: Margaret Douglas, Grandmother to King James VI & I

As the daughter and cousin of queens and the granddaughter and niece of kings, Lady Margaret Douglas was an integral part of the Tudor royal dynasty. A favourite of her uncle King Henry VIII and a close friend of Queen Mary I she courted scandal which saw her imprisoned in the Tower of London on more than one occasion. Against the orders of Queen Elizabeth I she plotted the marriage of her eldest son Lord Darnley to Mary, Queen of Scots with disastrous consequences. She came as close to the executioners block as she did to the throne of England, with some believing she had a right to be queen. A devout Catholic all her life, she lived at a time when religious division split the country in half yet she remained steadfast in her beliefs. A respected and revered lady on both sides of the border, Lady Margaret Douglas, later Countess of Lennox through her marriage, suffered much heartbreak and loss. Her husband and son were both murdered at the hands of the Scots and she outlived all her children. Despite these tragedies she never gave up on her dream of uniting the thrones of England and Scotland which was realised through her grandson King James VI/I. The story of her life is a remarkable tale of intrigue and survival and deserves to be more widely told.

I found this book comprehensive , easy to read and well written. What I am not seeing is referencing which has almost demoted its star rating. I still have a third to read and am hopeful there will be notes provided and possibly a bibliography. The writer must have researched the book . In a non fiction it’s sad to see it missing Index and footnotes both. Otherwise a well- written account of Margaret Douglas.

I am a huge fan of Tudor history so when I found out Beverley had written a book about Margaret I was thrilled as I had enjoyed her other books.

Margaret is definitely an overlooked woman of that period yet she lived such an extraordinary life and that is really brought to life in this book. I had no idea who she was before I picked this book up but now I have more of an understanding of her life she needs to be more well known than she is! She was so influential at the Tudor court and at the same time that meant she lived a life full of risks and danger.

I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it, Beverley Adams is now a permanent fixture on my ‘Author Watchlist’ and I hope she delves further into Tudor history. NetGalley User

I really enjoyed learning about Margaret Douglas, this is a well written and well researched book about a lesser known Tudor royal.

I’ve enjoyed the first two books from this author. So had pre-ordered her third.
I appreciate how the author shines a light onto forgotten or overlooked women from our history.
How men from the same time are given precedence instead.

So I was intrigued to read something from the Tudor period and how Margaret could take centre stage.

Although anyone can read a timeline of a historical figure. Bringing them to life is much more challenging. I loved reading and learning about Margaret and her life. And how richly and vividly she was painted by Adams in this well researched book.

A must read to bring this inspiring and fascinating, once forgotten woman to life.

It was so thoroughly interesting to read about Margaret Douglas and her contribution to the royal line of monarchs, past and present. Thoroughly researched and abundant with contemporary context, Beverley Adams’ biography of Margaret Douglas, The Forgotten Tudor Royal, highlights the perils of navigating the royal courts of Scotland and England during a time of political instability.

There ares several women who stand out in the Tudor period, and Lady Margaret Douglas is one. She was the niece of King Henry VIII and a close friend of Queen Mary I. Margaret was a head strong and rebellious woman who suffered much heartbreak and loss. Her husband and son were both murdered at the hands of the Scots and she outlived all her children. Against the orders of Queen Elizabeth I she plotted the marriage of her eldest son Lord Darnley to Mary, Queen of Scots, with disastrous consequences. A devout Catholic all her life, she lived at a time when religious division split the country in half yet she remained loyal to her faith. She never gave up on her dream of uniting the thrones of England and Scotland, which was finally realised through her grandson King James VI/I.
