The Girl at Change Alley: A captivating Victorian saga of lies and redemption (The Sheffield Sagas Book 2)
£1.90
A fallen woman. An opportunity for redemption. But at what cost?
Sheffield, 1867. It’s the height of a long-running and violent campaign known as the Outrages, where murderous acts are carried out on behalf of a rogue union leader.
Louisa Leigh, a former maid-of-all-work, is trapped into prostitution and desperate for money to escape. She befriends Ginny Hinchcliffe, a young widow who will do whatever it takes to break free from a life of servitude to her in-laws. The two women become entangled with Joe Crookes, henchman to the man responsible for the Outrages. Joe is looking for a way out even if that means betraying those closest to him.
With a single act, Louisa’s freedom would be paid for. But it’s not just her life on the line, and she’ll need to decide if she can live with the choices she’s about to make…
A sensationally compelling and gritty saga, for fans of Emma Hornby, Libby Ashworth and Kitty Neale.

Louisa, the heroine of this latest book from Joanne Clague, is warm and charismatic but she has fallen on hard times since we met her in The Ragged Valley. Louisa struggles to lift herself out of penury and avoid social disgrace, and eventually her predicament leads her into a sticky spot and a terrible dilemma… Joanne writes thoughtful, intelligent historical fiction with plenty of heart. It doesn’t take long before you are totally invested in Louisa’s fate and experiencing Victorian Sheffield through her eyes. This is a compelling tale, written with humour and great sensitivity.

I have not read any books by this author and looked forward to reading this one. I felt that the book took a while to get going and there was a great deal of unnecessary descriptive text. The story was good and well told once it started and I really felt for Louisa!! What a time for females to live if born into a poorer community!!
The book mostly held my attention but felt myself willing Ginny to leave the area, lol!

Joanne Clague writes beautifully, with compelling characters that I really care for and with plots that do not get bogged down in the historical elements – these are weaved in seamlessly. I love how with this second book in the series we see more of some of the characters from the first book, really building on the world and lives that the author has created, the beauty of sagas. I’m really looking forward to reading what Joanne Clague comes up with next!

Brilliant! Can’t praise this book enough. Loved the characters, the history and the Sheffield detail. Can’t wait for the next book.

This is the second book by Joanne Clague that I have read and loved. As with the first, The Girl at Change Alley is set in the Victorian era. This second book focuses on the stories of Louisa and Ginny. Both women are far from perfect, but I felt drawn to the characters from the start and really felt for Louisa in particular. The novel is fast paced, the historical detail just right (enough to give you a real sense of the period, not too much to slow the story down). I found myself turning those pages quickly! Highly recommend and an author to watch.

Excited to start this book and was not disappointed. Couldn’t put it down once I started and think this would make an amazing tv series/film. Looking forward to the next one.

You have to read the first book to understand the characters in this one but both books are a very good read.
