It took a while to get hooked. There are lots of characters and the main one is not exactly lovable. I wouldn’t describe it as a romp, since that suggests some humour. The picture of sleazy Victorian Whitechapel is vividly drawn and though the ending gets a little melodramatic I enjoyed reading the book.

It took me a good few days to get into this book.
I found it quite hard going to read in some places. There are however lots of good points. It was atmospheric, I felt like I was in victorian London. Cage was a likeable character and his story built in the end and unfolded giving a great sense of knowing who he was.
I guessed who had done it quite early on , but the twists towards the end I wasn’t expecting, they made a welcome addition. Victorian London was indeed a dark place and it came across very well.

This book is a delightful and morbid love/crime story. And just as you think you’ve worked it all out another story comes out and there you go.
Having said that it’s not boring and it’s descriptions of the area and poverty are so full of imagery. Worth a read.

A gripping dip into the underworld of Victorian society, populated by secrets and lies – those we tell to others, and those we tell ourselves.
I loved the way Evans wove the mystery of her plot and the backstory of her main characters together.
Highly recommended. I look forward to reading her other work.

… and with a certain elegance in the writing and plot. The anti-hero, Cage Lackmann, is certainly interesting and not entirely likeable. It was sometimes difficult keeping up with the large cast of characters, but this added to the complexity and appeal. I think, perhaps, the melodrama of the last chapters prevented me from giving this five stars.

I don’t know if this is a first novel but if it is, then the writer has real promise but if not, then I found this story a little thin in places.

I felt the storyline to be quite unusual but I really love the way this author writes as I was kept interested from beginning to end. Unlike other reviewers, I found the main character to be fairly likeable as it seemed he was unhappy with himself and his life so I was more sympathetic to him.

This book is brilliant! It’s not slow getting started if anything you hit the ground running and it just keeps up the pace. The story line isn’t too complex but you don’t want to put it down its great.
