I ordered this book at 11am and it was delivered by Amazon on the same day at 6.30pm, so top marks for delivery speed.
I found this book quite interesting and it will be useful in the future. I don’t really enjoy cooking and I don’t have a lot of time for it either, but with three other mouths to feed in the house I needed inspiration for nice meals that require minimal effort from me. This book has given me many ideas and I will be trying them. For example, whole stuffed mini pumpkins with sage ad goats cheese sounds good, as does red wine mushroom casserole with cheese cobbler topping or all-in-one sweet potato thai curry. These will be some of the first recipes I will try.
Now, I do like this book and a do recommend it but it in not perfect….
I find it annoying that the vegetarian recipes often include parmesan or gorgonzola – these cheeses are NOT suitable for vegetarians (more info on this further down). It’s disappointing that these cheeses have been included in a vegetarian recipe book. Of course this isn’t an issue for vegans but it could cause problems if someone who eats meat uses this book to prepare a meal for someone who is vegetarian.
The author did make reference to the fact that her boyfriend like ready-rolled puff pastry and there would be a bunch of these types of dishes. These are mainly in the vegetarian section. The first couple are interesting enough but after a while the rest of the pastry tray bakes/tarts/quiche gets a bit boring.
The use of large double-page pictures of one dish I find a bit annoying too. I’ll want to grab this book, find something quickly and chuck it all in a dish ready for the oven, not turn pages of filler.
Apart from that the book is in a nice order, a nice size and contains useful mix and match charts to provide inspiration for creating warm salads, all-in-one stews/tangines/curries, tarts and gratins.
For those of you reading this who didn’t know these cheeses aren’t suitable for vegetarians, it’s because parmesan and gorgonzola are protected products and must be made in the traditional way in order to be called ‘parmesan’ or ‘gorgonzola’. The traditional methods include the use of calf rennet, an enzyme taken from the stomach of a newly-born (but then slaughtered) calf. More info can be found online.
Alternatives of these are available. Sainsbury’s and Ocado stock ‘Vegetarian Italian Hard Cheese’ which is identical to parmesan. I am unaware of a vegetarian gorgonzola however there are other soft blue cheeses widely available in supermarkets that could be used, such as Dolcelatte.

This brilliant book has got me back into enjoying cooking. The recipes are simple, easy to prepare and delicious to eat!! Its so simple. Ive never loved cooking and in my older years became lazy and only did everyday stuff , jacket potatoes, cold meat salads, anything that was quick to prepare. So very boring!
Now the book is on my table ready to pick up and make something tasty. I highly reccommend it. And a must for those beginning to cook for themselves.

Firstly I’m going to address the issues that others have written in their reviews which almost put me off purchasing.
Not enough photos: actually there’s one gorgeous glossy single page photo for each recipe, with double page shots mixed in.
Print quality: the one I received was in amazing condition and utterly flawless, a thing of beauty.
Too much cheese: actually half the book is vegan (no cheese whatsoever) the other half vegetarian (and only about half the vegetarian recipes had cheese).
Not enough protein: people leaving this complaint clearly do not know what foods contain protein. Nor can they use their imagination to add additional protein.
Now my review proper:
I love the size of this book! I’m not sure why this is so impressive to me, but it is. It’s not too big nor too heavy. I have spent most of my afternoon leafing through it and getting super excited about vegetables again.
My favourite part is the centrefolds where there’s flowcharts to design your own tray based on what you might have readily available in the kitchen. Hundreds of possibilities.
I also like that it is split into recipes for when you’re in a hurry / when you have slightly more time / when you want to go slow. I bought this book with Xmas vouchers and can’t wait to welcome 2023 and get going with fresh plans of nutritional cooking.
