The Hammer Story: The Authorised History of Hammer Films
£22.90
Fifty years ago, Hammer Films released their very first horror movie, The Quatermass Xperiment. The now-legendary British company went on to make such classics as The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula (and their many sequels), making international stars out of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, changing the face of horror cinema, and inspiring a generation of Hollywood filmmakers, including the likes of George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Now, for the first time, Hammer have given their active backing to an authorised history of the company, and have provided unlimited access to their archives. The Hammer Story provides a film-by-film dissection, dripping with rare promotional material and previously unpublished photographs.

I’ve always loved Hammer Studios, especially their horror output, so when I saw this book I just knew I had to buy it.
The book is just amazing and it is written by a fan, rather than some clever wind-bag.
Everything one wants to know about Hammer is here, and it starts from the beginning, right up to their final film: “To The Devil, A Daughter.” I’d recommend this book to everyone who loves and misses a truly golden age of cinema.

They really have done very well with this book. Nice balance between the amount of text and images as well. Sections are as follows …
Reanimation 1955 — 1964
From The Quatermass Xperiment to The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb
Fresh Blood 1965 — 1969
From She to Taste The Blood of Dracula
Setting Son 1970 — 1975
From The Vampire Lovers to To The Devil a Daughter
Life After Death 1975 Onwards
That’s about it, really.

This is the way a history should be written, it covers all the relevant facts, provides interesting bits of info, reproduces lots of rare memorabillia and is easy to read.
It is obvious it has been a labour of love and Marcus Hearn deserves a huge pat on the back for the time and effort he has put into this work which has been so carefully and lovingly compiled.
If you are looking for a book on Hammer films, this is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is full of information and beautifully illustrated. I would recommend it not only to fans of Hammer films or the genre, but also to anyone interested in British film entertainment. Even if you only remember a few of the films, you will enjoy dipping in to it.

Absolutely wonderful coffee table book for anyone interested in the world of Hammer Horror and British Horror film history.
There are great pages detailing each film and how it was made, plus biography’s of actors who worked with the company regularly like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
I appreciate this book is for quite a niche audience, but this is a wonderful authorized guide particularly for that niche.
(One thing for any readers that expect this book to detail the recent resurgence of Hammer, with films like The Woman in Black, you should be aware it doesn’t).

The book is great, all you could ask for, but as another reviewer stated the dust jacket had deep scratches on the back cover, at £25 for the book its not really on. Im not bothering to go through the hassle of sending it back. You may get a perfect copy, i didnt, but as i said, the content is great. Amazon should check books over before sending to despatch department.
