An enjoyable read but I predicted the ending, but nevertheless a well written book

This was well written and very easy to read. The plot was good, with some interesting twists and turns. The ending was predictable but that didn’t take away any of the enjoyment of the story.

I’ve enjoyed some of Jackie Kabler’s other books and I do like her writing style and the way she develops some of her characters, but this particular story just leaves me at a loss as to why it’s got so many positive reviews.
The scenario was ridiculously far-fetched from the start: mother who walked out on her husband and daughter more than 30 years ago suddenly rocks back up on daughter’s doorstep and daughter welcomes her into her life, no questions asked, and even lets her move in. None of the daughter’s supposedly very close friends seem to question it either and are all delighted for her and don’t seem to offer any words of caution.
Then things start going wrong for the daughter. Hmm, wonder if there’s any connection there…
A dark secret from the past is heavily hinted at from very early on in the book and it didn’t take me very long to work out what was going on and who was who – even the supposed ‘twist’ at the end about someone’s real identity was obvious from a mile off.
I skimmed from about 25% to 75% of this book as it was just more of the same and so blindingly obvious what was going on and what was going to happen.
Very disappointing and it’s put me off the author completely.

Gripped me from start to finish. Great read.

First book of Jackie’s I’ve read. Interesting to recognise a lot of the place names and references. Will definitely try another.

Beth is a single mother who works as a manager in a doctors surgery. She is on good terms with her ex and her life in general is going well. She has a some good friends in the form of neighbours and colleagues at work. The only thing missing from her life is her mother who walked out on her when she was a child. She is also hiding a secret from her past which has weighed heavily on her mind over the years.
When Beth’s mother unexpectedly turns up in her life, everything starts to go wrong threatening to ruin her life. I have to admit that I spotted the twists very early on in the story. Not sure if it’s because I read lots of books in this genre or it was my gut instinct that kept me on the right track but either way I was correct in my thinking. This didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this book though. I could appreciate all the red herrings and the build up of suspense and tension. What Beth was going through still affected me and I was desperate for the truth to be uncovered.
The Happy Family is very much a story of secrets and lies and how they can control us. Whilst I may have guessed the twists, this still made for an enthralling page turner of a read that I raced through. This is my first novel by the author and as she writes in one of my favourite genres, I look forward to reading more by her.

This book was a great read. Around halfway through it appeared predictable, and although the predictability made me lose slight interest, I just couldn’t stop reading it! I look forward to reading more of Jackie Kabler.
