The History of Europe in Bite-sized Chunks
£0.90
An accessible and succinct account of the story of Europe from its ancient foundations to the twenty-first century, The History of Europe in Bite-sized Chunks details the events, personalities, ideas and disasters that have shaped our continent.
The book is broken down into six easily digestible chapters: Classical Antiquity (2600 BCE to 600 CE); Medieval (600-1500); Reform and Enlightenment (1500-1780); Age of Revolutions (1780-1914); the Wars (1914-45); and the Making of Contemporary Europe (1945 to present). It begins with the first ancient culture to emerge in Europe: the Minoans. It then proceeds chronologically to the present day, taking in not just significant historical events but also overarching social, technological and cultural trends and their impact.
Throughout the book there are mini-biographies of notable individuals (such as Julius Caesar, Catherine the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte) who have been most significant in European history. It is also packed with amazing facts, details and maps that will give the reader a vivid understanding of Europe’s past
With the prospect of Brexit looming in Spring 2019, there is no better time to get a handle on European history!

Certainly the best history book I have read. Perhaps the format (wide scope, concentrating on change and interactions) suits me?

I was very impressed with this book — I was looking for something to give to a relative who is a Brexit voter and needs to understand rather more about Europe than the stuff in the British media, and it fitted the bill perfectly. It’s a very thorough but easily-read summary of how Europe evolved, with plenty of enjoyable nuggets. My only gripe is that I would have preferred to have bought it on Kindle but (I could be wrong) there only seems to be a paper version.

it was well written, but extremely abbreviated. when I found I wanted to know more, it stopped!

Remarkably well put together! Condenses a huge volume of information into a clear, concise and coherent summation. Goes all the way from the ancient world to 21st century! Excellent book.

Good overview spanning centuries, covering key epochs up to present day.
Good balance between detail and light coverage.
One omission on the Enlightenment was the interaction between the Continent and the Scottish Enlightenment where the modern disciplines were formed and developed.
After all, Scotland is in Europe.
by Neogoonhead
A reasonable if disjointed account of European history which culminates in a lenient and unrealistically positive interpretation of the growth of the EU which glosses over corruption and it’s anti democratic structure.
Roughly a ‘ Guardianista ‘ spin of recent history.

I bought one copy for myself and another as a gift for a friend. We both love history and wanted to know more about the history of Europe. With this book, we could dip in and out, learning fun facts and interesting things. I loved the mini-biographies–they really brought history to life! My friend loved the maps!
