The Horror of Haglin House: A totally enthralling Victorian crime thriller (The Violet Thorn Mysteries Book 1)

£0.90

Home is where the horror is…

Jilted thriller writer Lady Violet Thorn has withdrawn to the Suffolk market town of Montford with two servants and her leading character, the adventuress Ruby Gibson, for company.

Violet’s peace is disturbed when a stranger asks her for help, claiming that a friend is being kept prisoner in her own home. Her visitor seems so afraid that Violet, despite her scepticism, is persuaded to investigate.

A woman is killed outside Violet’s house, then another murdered in the town and, as the deaths mount up, she becomes convinced that they all lead to one place: the increasingly forbidding Haglin House, and whoever lives there…

M.R.C. Kasasian returns with a fresh, witty and totally enthralling take on the classic crime genre, perfect for fans of Anthony Horowitz, M. C. Beaton and Oscar De Muriel.

I bought this without hesitation after enjoying the Mangle St series. Most of this book was good once you had got used to the multiple personality disorder. The author definitely ‘phoned it in’ with the ending though, it was laughably bad, so much so that I have no intention of reading any more Lady Violet books, if published.

The Horror of Haglin House is easily one of the best books I have read. It has everything in it, murder, mystery, humour (lots of that) and wonderful characters. Once you realise that two of the characters exist only in Hettie Grangers head (they are fictional people from the books she writes) things become clearer. She frequently spends time in conversation with them and the dialogue they share is full of wit and sarcasm. I have read all the books by this author but this is my favourite. I shall definitely read it again. I am so pleased it is going to be the first in a series. (But I would have liked it in hardback like his other books.)

Marvelous! I thought this wonderful author had disappeared off the face of the earth – with Violet I can almost forgive him for not writing another Sidney Grice novel. A fantastic read – can’t wait for the next in series

Book was fantastic but had to skip a lot as there is far too much talking to her book characters in her head. Far, far too much. Nearly gave up reading it but just flashed eyes over the pages when she talked to them. No need for that much nonsense.

Was praying the author would write Victorian era again and it was worth the wait. What a great read! Absolutely loved it. A very unique voice and may not be for everyone, but I’m hoping there is more. Please, please, please!

I found it captivating and loved the intricate yet playful plotting. The variety and pace of the dialogue really added to my enjoyment. A thoroughly engaging novel.

I absolutely loved this book. The great plot is woven with whimsical and hugely entertaining interactions writer Violet Thorn has with the imaginary characters in her head. Bring on the next one.

Having enjoyed all this authors fiction published before this book, I am saddened to have to say that the unique device of having the heroine (who is an author of adventure stories) chat almost incessantly in her own imagination with her fictional characters, achieves little except to expand the length of the story by about 50% and to make its telling rather confusing. I will not be reading any more of his fiction until he reverts to his original style, which made his Sydney Grice stories so enjoyable.
