I purchased this book for my daughter’s 11th birthday. I chose it as I thought it would be very like the one I had as a child which was full of amazing information and pictures on everything about horses and riding. As it was advertised as being by the same author Elwyn Hartley Edwards I assumed it would be very similar and she would love it. I have to say I was really disappointed when it arrived. Basically it is a book on horse breeds from around the world with nearly 200 pages allocated to this subject. There are only 16 pages telling you about the care and management of the horse and nothing at all on riding itself. Whilst it is a lovely book for breed enthusiasts, I would not recommend it for any horse mad little girls out there that want to learn everything there is to know about horses and ponies, from riding and looking after them, to grooming, saddlery, etc. This would not be the book for them. I have now ordered a second hand copy of the original “Encyclopedia of the Horse” the same as the one I had growing up. She may well laugh at the slightly dated photographs from the 80’s in it but I also know she will learn everything she needs to know about horses and riding and will love it just as much as I loved mine.
