This book is beautifully presented with an attractive layout including a large number of pictures. The book covers the following sections:
* Introduction with tips for the novice cook including advice on hygiene, budget and building a store cupboard;
* Pasta; Stir-fries, noodles and rice;
* Jacket potatoes and toppings;
* In bread and on toast;
* Easy dinners and feeding friends;
* Soups, stews and curries;
* Salads, veggies and sides;
* Breakfast;
* Sweets.
I graduated in 2007 so my student days are long past but I wish this book had been around then. The cover price is incredibly reasonable and much care has been taken to give tips to the novice cook as well as ensuring the recipes are simple to follow and inexpensive. There are lots of recipe ideas for one which are perfect for people living alone or just cooking a quick meal for themselves.
As a young professional this book is a great find for me because I don’t have much time during the week to dedicate to booking in the evening. There are loads of great recipes which are simple and quick to cook. Because I am time poor (rather than cash-poor like most students) I use this book in a different way focusing in on main meals and the salad section (and not the toast/jacket potato sections) but there is more than enough for me to try. I’m sure many of the recipes will become staple mid-week meals. This week I made the lamb tagine and it was beautiful but so easy.
This book is highly recommended to students but also to anyone who wants some inspiration for quick, simple meals. If the Sweets section is anything to go by, the accompanying baking book will be fantastic too.

Am a second year so have been cooking a little, finding this book pretty handy for some go-to dinner ideas. Most of it is pretty healthy though I did find the pasta section a bit longer than preferred. Have tried a few & been super delicious so far! Agree with other reviews saying they found the cover flimsy, but will be keeping it around 🙂

I bought this for my daughter as she went to uni, in looking at the recipes I ordered myself a copy. Both me and my daughter would recommend

Great book with lots of handy recipes. The main disadvantages are it does not include the time taken to make the meal, as well as macronutrients

It’s very good with simple and clear recipes. Sometimes think it’s not quiet as economical as it could be, but even students need to indulge themselves occasionally.

I bought this book for my daughter who is heading to college soon. She loved it, thank you ????. Many of the recipes contains alcohol though, that’s is my only dislike and off course one can omit if needed.

This was a gift for my daughter who is planning to go to college and needs to gain more skills in the kitchen. She has only cooked one thing from the book so far which was very good. The recipes seem easy to follow and there are some good recipes which she wants to try. My only niggle would be the style of the cover which seems a bit thin and flimsy- and looks like it won’t last long. a more hard backed or solid cover would have been preferable. The cover does look a bit boring too and I think it could be a more exciting design as it looks a little unexciting. However it seems well written and put together which is the main thing.

I bought the first book for my two sons in an attempt to get them cooking from scratch whilst on a budget. I shudder when I see the ‘ready meals’ in their fridge! When the book arrived, I flicked through the pages and found myself writing down lots of the recipes to cook for the rest of the family. Most are relatively cheap to make (although one recipe does require steak which I believe to be a rather extravagant ingredient if you’re a student on a very tight budget hence only 4 stars) and simple to cook. I ended up buying a second copy for myself! A very good book all round for anyone who wants/has to be frugal with their shopping budget but not compromise on good nutrition.
