I have been wanting to develop an understanding and appreciation of art for some time and made a few false starts in various ways. This book is a pleasure to use. The chronological approach means you always have instant context and can easily cross-reference as you need. DK have always known how to present information and images to the highest standard, so no surprise this is a quality resource book. Highly recommended!

I have been eagerly waiting for this to arrive and now that I have it I am not disappointed. This is a beautiful book, very well researched and written. Fantastic for experts or those like me who just want to look at beautiful paintings. The bonus is this has thousands of paintings and the key information on every single one.
A must buy that will be treasured.

When I ordered this book from Amazon I was not sure what to expect. However,my doubts were quickly expelled when I received this book. The text and reproductions of art from prehistoric cave art to modern pop and op art are extremely good. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to students of the History of Art.

This is a lovely book, fairly big and heavy, full of lovely colour photos. Nice layout. But not enough more recent art for me. Lots of old classic and religious art. Would just like the balance to have included more impressionist and more recent style art.

This book is ruined for lack of a single word. It is not the “story of art”. It is the story of WESTERN art. Despite the all-encompassing title, you will find no Japanese, Chinese or Indian Art here. Nothing from Africa, barring some nods at the ancient Egyptians. In fact, given there is equally no Mayan or Inca art, it might more accurately be called the Story of WHITE Art – I have yet to find a black artist named in it. It has the kind of perspective you might expect in a book published in the 1970s.
It does, of course, have a wealth of glorious, mostly European painting in it, but the suggestion that this is all there is means that it misses the big picture. I did want to use it to get my son interested in art and its history, but that will have to wait until I can get some other books to balance it (not apparently offered by DK), and of course big stickers to modify the title!

Highly recommend this book – chock full of high quality, full colour illustrations of artworks from all of history. In chronological order. With bite size paragraphs explaining the styles, the times, the artists etc. What a feat. DK should be really proud of this book.
I bought it because although I’m an artist, I didn’t go to art school or have much in the way of tutoring at school. I wanted to find out more about i) the difference between the Renaissance and Mannerism, ii) the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood’s raison d’etre, and iii) the development of art in the 20th century. I intended to read those sections of the book.
Well, I read it from cover to cover starting with the early cave paintings etc. Utterly fascinating. And a feast for the eyes. It’s a big book, and very heavy. The pages are about 11.5″ x 9.5″.
If you know any budding artists this would make a wonderful present for them. I wish I’d had this book years ago.

This is a very good book to give to a student of western art. It is comprehensive and easy to use whilst covering the relevant points of the various art movements.
