I bought James’ book as I know from following him on social media that he has a wealth of knowledge on the subject of freelance illustration careers – and I was not disappointed. The book was packed full with tips on how to get started in the business, which is appropriate whether you’re fresh out of art school or are switching careers mid-life. I particularly liked the way that the book was structured, with an initial focus on how to build a portfolio (and stay motivated when there isn’t someone breathing down your neck or setting deadlines for you), before moving on to some of the nuts and bolts of the business side of being a freelance creative. I’ve just finished reading it through for the first time and am now planning to go back, section-by-section, to do some of the exercises.

James sent me an advance of the book and I read it all within 2 days. There is so much valuable information for any budding illustrator in here – and all written in a very accessible way. I found the bullet point chapter summaries particularly helpful! The book covers everything you would need to know to start a career in illustration, and a lot of industry insights that I found weren’t really discussed much at University. Highly recommend to anybody looking to start out in illustration!

I’ve been a fulltime illustrator for 13 years now and I’ve had to pick up the odd grain of knowledge along the way in order to make it a successfull career. I studied Illustration at university and although we delved deeply into artistic exploration we we’re given hardly any pratical advice about how to actually go about making it into a profession.
I was given an advance copy of this book and I wish it had been around when I graduated. Easily digestible and packed full of inside tips and tricks you’d normally have to spend years learning about on the job, this will help new illustrators start their journey but also give practicing illustrators a helpful refresher into new ways to build a better career.
Highly recommend to anyone interested in Illustration.
