The Judge’s List: John Grisham’s breathtaking, must-read bestseller

£5.20

***THE SUNDAY TIMES THRILLER OF THE MONTH***

‘Besides the usual Grisham virtues of an arresting idea, polished plotting and vivid social snapshots, what’s impressive here is his willingness to take on fresh challenges’ THE SUNDAY TIMES

Nonstop suspense from theSunday Times bestselling author: Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer, and closes in on a shocking suspect – a sitting judge.

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change.

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law.

He is a judge, in Florida – under Lacy’s jurisdiction.

He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

The Judge’s List is by any measure John Grisham’s most surprising, chilling novel yet.

His books can be a bit hit & miss these days but I really enjoyed this one. Strong characters & fast paced with a satisfactory ending made it an easy read. Recommended for any JG fans.

I usually like John Grisham books, but here, initially, I wondered when the story took place. It begins with one main protagonist approaching another main protagonist about investigations into a murder that took place ‘22 years ago’; it is some way in before we learn the murder took place in 1992, placing the ‘present day’ of the novel as 2014 (several years before the publication date given of this edition). It would have been helpful to have renamed sections of the book as ‘February 2014, April 2014, etc’ for clarification, as otherwise it’s difficult to know the relevance of references to dates such as 1989, 2004 etc.
Another thing, it’s about investigations into a possible serial killer, but peppered with remarks from the author that this particular villain and/or his activities are incredible, and very different to other (real-life) serial killers.
Also, the two main female protagonists are each thinly drawn, we really don’t get that deep a sense of their characters. One, we are told, appeared in an earlier book – I feel no desire to read that book – and here, lives alone with her seemingly unloved and neglected pet dog (that is, unloved and neglected by the author), it would have been better for the dog not to have been in the book at all.

You really will never put this down, I didn’t. Read it in the dark alone? Certainly not

The second book starring Lacy Stoltz of the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct in what could be her most explosive case yet. Could a well-known and respected judge also be a secret serial killer, and if so, can he be stopped before he kills again?
Incredible story with some heart thumping moments and a cat and mouse chase to catch the killer before it’s too late.
Enjoy as a follow up to The Whistler or as a standalone novel.
