The Learning Game: Teaching Kids to Think for Themselves, Embrace Challenge, and Love Learning

How did we conclude that the best way to prepare kids for the future is to cluster them into classrooms by age and grade, forcing them to learn the same things, at the same time and pace, seven hours a day, five days a week, for twelve years?

We trust the school system to prepare our kids for the future. We get excited when they get good grades, or disappointed if they don’t. But we rarely stop to question whether school is teaching our children the right things in the right way.

Kids could get good at playing the game of school, but are they really learning?

Teacher-turned-edupreneur Ana Lorena Fábrega, known by her students as Ms. Fab, invites us to rethink education.

In The Learning Game, she reveals how traditional schooling has gone wrong, and proposes a series of actionable strategies to help kids learn.

What if we guide kids to think for themselves?
Should we encourage kids to take risks and tackle projects of their own?
How do we help kids learn to love learning?

Answering these questions and many more, The Learning Game will arm you with practical tools to design a new approach to learning―one that leaves behind the game of school and prepares your kids for the game of life.

I have been inspired by Ana for a long time so when I heard that she had written a book, I was first in the queue to get copies. I also took the opportunity to interview her on the Edufuturists podcast.

Ana’s book is a perfect balance between theory and practice, highlighting the challenges and offering solutions. I love how she talks about the game of learning and bringing back the fun and curiosity.

If you read one book about the future of education, make it this one.

I have recently finished reading The Learning Game and I am confident to say that this is one of the most insightful books I have read this year.

The Learning Game is excellent for those who are only starting to explore alternative education and may not know where to start.
For those like me who work in education and have been reading many books on the subject, we still get to learn so many new insights and get inspired to dive deeper into some of the many concepts Ana mentions.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the book was all the nice colourful pictures supporting each stories. The book is easy to understand and can be read very fast.

I am looking forward to a second book!

Over two years ago, my then 11 year old son joined Synthesis – an online education platform that put students in groups into simulations in which they had to devise best strategies with limited information, and revise and adjust as they learn, take ownership of mistakes, understand them as opportunities for course corrections, and think in mental models. It was absolutely astonishing what happened next – and how my son turned into an articulate, creative team player, who thrived on responsibility and embraced the unpredictable (the “chaos”). Within months I had sophisticated discussions with him on mental models, such as game theory – without the jargon, but with the concepts. “The Learning Game” offers a conceptual anchor for what happened at Synthesis and why. It’s really readable, and comes with valuable summaries and tips that can be applied right away – but most importantly, it changes your mind. You’ll never see learning and schools the same after it. And you’ll make better decisions for your kids!
