I must declare my obvious bias, I wrote a small part of one chapter and am the author’s friend.
However, that does not detract from my praise for the honesty and soul exposing content this book possesses. With broad strokes the story paints a picture of a brave and dedicated man’s life. With heart rending raw emotion it describes the agony and tragedy of existence made tenuous by serious illness.
It exposes the disgraceful practices of some senior prison service managers who, are not fit to breathe the same air as uniformed staff.
Most of all though, this book expertly describes how an ordinary working man can become extraordinary by simply being himself and doing a job most people would never attempt.

I’m fortunate to call Phil a friend. The bravest man I know both personally and professionally. I was interested to see if the story was real and wasn’t disappointed ( knowing Phil it was always going to be honest)
A great insight into the complexity of prison life. The relationships formed and how respect is earned and how positive relationships keep everyone safe in a powder keg. Phil is brutally honest and this amazing story pulls no punches when it comes to prison life and his personal battle with cancer.
    A must read this year!

Finished this book within a day, a true account of what it’s like to work behind the walls, expertly told by the author, brutally honest and candid from a very experienced member of staff.
I would highly recommend this to anyone as Phil tells it like it is.
