My 4 year old definitely knows what the Northern Lights are (after me saying I really want to see them all winter) so this book was a perfect addition to his library. We have a couple of Yuval Zommer’s books already so know the illustrations well and the types of stories he tells. I really like that this one kind of explains where it is the particles for the Northern Lights come from (the sun) and the rhyming story takes you on a journey to earth where everyone – humans and animals – come together to look at the skies as they are illuminated. I love the illustrations – they’re simple but very detailed which creates different textures. I also like that it introduces a variety of animals found in the Arctic like musk ox and even puffins so he can see the variety of wildlife. The interpretation of these animals can look a bit strange with their eyes on one side of their head (like Peppa Pig) but I don’t think it really detracts much from the story.

I got the hardback version of this book for my 6 year old daughter and it is a lovely bedtime read.

Describing the beauty of the Northern lights, this is a wonderous look with fantastic illustrations of Arctic landscapes, animals and people. The rhyming text is free flowing and you are able to get a good rhythm going as you journey through the book with the Northern lights.

I don’t think there are any on trend “environmental” or “Christmas” messages overtly or either hidden in the book, despite the times we live in and the fact this is out just in time for Christmas. This book for me, is purely about the magic, beauty and wonder that the Northern Lights can conjure. How tiny solar particles sent 93 million miles through space before colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere can create a light show that is both mesmerising and humbling as we realise we are part of something much bigger… the universe.

Thankfully the book is not so “heavy”. It’s a good sized hardback for two people to read together and the front of the book has some glitter effects to add to the magic. The only negative then having read this book, is that we can’t see the real thing where we live 🙂

    Maybe one day…

This is a good quality, large-format hardback that introduces children to the northern lights and what creates this magnificent spectacle.

The pictures are stunning, and the text is gently rhyming, which makes it lovely to read aloud.

I think this is a beautiful book to illustrate the wonders of nature in colder climes and to open up a discussion about how important it is to protect this fragile biosphere.

I do, however, share the concerns of other reviewers who have pointed out the oddity of having animals drawn with both eyes on the one side if their head. My grandson spotted this and asked me why. I had no answer!

A dreamily enchanting book about the Northern Lights which should delight any child whist teaching them about life in the colder places on Earth and hopefully instilling in them a yearning to keep those places cold, frozen and as they are supposed to be – not as global warming is trying to make them.

Read this to your child – the rhymes are delightful – and as you go along, try to explain to them that the world they are immersed in through this book will soon be lost for ever if things don’t change. A good book for introducing children to the effects of global warming and the damage that human activity is inflicting upon the Earth.

Beautifully illustrated book with wonderful photos that are an absolute pleasure to look at. My children have all loved this story and have asked me to read it every night for the past two weeks.

So a great simple story that’s easy to understand and follow for small children.

Overall a wonderful book that I would happily recommend and my children will continue to enjoy throughout the year
