The Mystery of Doggerland: Atlantis in the North Sea

A scientific exploration of the advanced ancient civilization known as Doggerland or Fairland that disappeared 5,000 years ago.

New marine archaeological evidence has revealed the remains of a large land mass to the north of Britain that hosted an advanced civilization 1,000 years before the recognized “first” civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, or India. Remembered in Celtic legends as Tu-lay, and referred to by geologists as Doggerland or Fairland, this civilization began at least as early as 4000 BC but was ultimately destroyed by rising sea levels, huge tsunamis, and a terrible viral epidemic released from melting permafrost during a cataclysmic period of global warming.

Exploring the latest archaeological findings and recent scientific analysis of Doggerland’s underwater remains, Graham Phillips shows that this ancient culture had sophisticated technology and advanced medical knowledge. He looks at evidence detected with remote sensing and seismic profiling of many artificial structures, complex settlements, gigantic earthworks, epic monoliths, and huge stone circles dated to more than 5,500 years ago, preserved beneath the ground and on the ocean floor. He examines evidence of Doggerland’s high-temperature technology, showing how its people were able to melt solid rock to create vitrified structures far stronger than concrete, a technique that modern science cannot replicate. He looks at the small part of the Fairland land mass that still exists: Fair Isle, a tiny island some 45 miles north of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Phillips shows how, when Fairland sank beneath the waves around 3100 BC, its last survivors traveled by boat to settle in the British Isles, where they established the megalithic culture that built Stonehenge.

Revealing the vast archaeological evidence in support of the existence of Doggerland, as well as its threads of influence in early cultures around the world, Phillips also shows how the fate of this sophisticated ancient culture is a warning from history: the cataclysmic events that happened to the first civilizations could happen again as the world heats up.

The publisher has misled us. This book barely mentions Doggerland, the land which once existed in the middle of the North Sea to the east of Britain. It is a vook about North Doggerland, a completely different precious large island, which was to the east of Orkney. Although the title and back cover is misleading, the book is interesting. Could do with a lot more maps, archaelogical plans and much better referencing.

Because the publisher is capitalising on the popularity of a totally different sunken landmass with a similat name, i am removing 2 stars. Just be honest. Or get the writer to actually write more about the other place too.

Interesting Book. A lot of Atlantis related information I liked. I thought narration was pretty good as well.

Very misleading title with barely any references to Doggerland at all. Do not recommend.

If you are looking for any substantive information about Doggerland you are likely to be disappointed. The author attempts to distance himself from fringe research related to Atlantis and Lemuria while simultaneously contradicting himself when it comes to the importance of oral traditions and myths. He makes no attempt to show how scholars have been consistently dogmatic in denying the possibility of an ancient civilisation, in spite of recent revelations regarding Gobekli Tepe. There is almost no reference to Doggerland in the whole book outside of a couple of passing mentions. If you are looking for an earth shattering revelatory experience about the possibility of a lost civilisation you won’t find it here. The focus is largely on a small portion of sunken land near Orkney which the author refers to as Fairland, which while very interesting, is not sufficiently substantial to fill more than a single chapter. The rest of the book treads very well trodden and safe ground, as if the author is more concerned about maintaining his reputation among his peers rather than challenging the dogmas inherent to archaeology and ancient civilisation research.

The main theme of the book is that Doggerland inhabitants provided ‘the know-how’ which was subsequently used by later cultures but provides no definitive information to support this. It is far to general in its approach and contains no primary research (and very few secondary) references. Despite its publicity it does not add anything to already known information. Disappointing!

An interesting work which discusses the theory of a lost megalithic civilisation to the north of the Orkneys which may have been responsible for the introduction and spread of the megalithic culture into the British Isles. Much of the book, however discusses the legends surrounding Atlantis, Mu and Lemuria, as well as verifiable historical floods in the ancient past. When it came to discussing the actual focus of the book, NORTH Doggerland, very little information, in my opinion was given, and a lot of repetition about the general pattern of stone circles, king stones, stone avenue and mounds.

I would have liked to have known more about the actual discoveries on the sea bottom and whether any further research was, is and will be carried out. I would also point out that the title of the book is very misleading as it has nothing to do with the former landmass, Doggerland, situated between England and Europe but a much smaller area known as North Doggerland off the far north of Scotland. The title should, in my opinion, be changed to reflect this!

I am also disappointed that there was no clear attempt to discuss any potential connection with the real Doggerland and the recent discoveries made there. I think that was a lost opportunity. There is scope here for a much bigger book which discusses both these landmasses, their civilisations and potential connections.

I have removed one star for the misleading title and another for the scanty information on North Doggerland.

On a more positive note I found the photographic plates most stunning. 5 stars for the photography!
