The Narrative Gym for Medicine: Introducing the ABT Framework for Medical Communication with Peers, Professionals, and the Public
£3.90
Communication is central to medicine, yet the COVID-19 pandemic revealed major shortcomings in the communication skills of medical professionals. As the world continues to drown in excess amounts of information (communicated ever more rapidly by social media), the ability to maintain focus becomes increasingly difficult.
Enter the ABT.
For more than a decade we have been developing the ABT Framework as both a model for narrative structure and a tool for strengthening what we have termed “narrative intuition.” In this, the 6th version of the Narrative Gym series (following the introductory version, then business, law, politics, and science) we offer up two things: 1) the model, 2) its applications.
Perhaps the most powerful part of the book is chapter 7 where ABT founder Randy Olson teams up with Navid Ghaffari, MD to explain specifically how to apply the ABT within the medical profession. The book is brief, to the point, and most importantly, practical.

This morning I started reading Randy Olson’s latest book AND I knew that I’d be able to finish it quickly before a meeting at 12pm. BUT that 12pm suddenly looked unlikely because I was so absorbed by the new ideas I was unearthing in ‘The ABT for Medicine.’ THEREFORE I quickly rearranged my 12 o’clock by calling my colleague and saying, ‘Sorry but something important has cropped up. Can we push back by an hour?’
What you have read is both an ABT in action and true. Not only that, but it is an every day tale of situation, problem, conclusion that drives every moment of our lives. This is why this book works and why it is important.
As a business story coach, the work of Randy Olson has been central to how I focus the thinking of my clients.
I’ve known Randy for nearly three years now and have read every iteration of the ABT series. And as is only fitting for a work written by an evolutionary biologist it is wonderful to see how his thinking and application has evolved.
This isn’t just a book for the medical profession. It is a book for anyone who needs to connect and convince in a way that hits heart and head.
Bravo Randy. Again!
