The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown

For seventy years, Queen Elizabeth ruled over an institution and a family. During her lifetime she was constant in her desire to provide a steady presence and to be a trustworthy steward of the British people and the Commonwealth. In the face of her uncle’s abdication, in the uncertainty of the Blitz, and in the tentative exposure of her family and private life to the public via the press, Elizabeth became synonymous with the crown.
?
But times change. Recent years have brought grief and turmoil to the House of Windsor, and even as England celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, there were calls for a changing of the guard.

In The New Royals, journalist Katie Nicholl provides a nuanced look at Elizabeth’s remarkable and unrivalled reign, with new stories from Palace courtiers and aides, documentarians, and family members. She examines King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla’s decades in waiting and beyond-where “The Firm” is headed as William and Kate present the modern faces of an ancient institution. In the wake of Harry and Meghan leaving the Royal Family and Prince Andrew’s spectacular fall from grace, the royal family must reckon with its history, the light and the dark, in order to chart a course for Britain beyond its Queen and to show that it is an institution capable of leadership in an ever-changing modern world.

I liked a lot of the book, but although it wasn’t heavy going I did not admire the fact about Meghan’s lies were not mentioned at all. Or perhaps she was just being on the fence. I did enjoy it. It’s not a heavy tome or indeed heavy writing, it’s easy to understand as it’s only 12 chapters and goes through 70 years at a cracking pace. Some writers go through the events in more detail. This is a light skimming if you will of the Queen’s reign. But she has shown quite correctly I feel (in my opinion) that William is like his grandmother as Charles is like his grandmother. Perhaps that means George will be like Charles. Who knows.

‘The New Royals’ by Katie Nicholl is a super read. Diligently researched and using only well informed, and trusted sources, Katie shines a spotlight on the next chapter of the Royal Family as it adapts after the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. This book is elegantly written by a well respected author and broadcaster who has been covering the Royals for several years. Highly recommend!

I’ve always been a great fan of journalist Katie Nichols since her column as Royal Correspondent . With my recent brush with the Monarchy in Fortnum’s & BBC’s Platinum Pudding Competition The New Royals gives us an insight and fills the void after our late Queens passing . Queen Elizabeth II has left a tremendous legacy and void in our hearts . Katie asks the tough questions we are all thinking , will the New Royals be up for the huge undertaking to preserve the monarchy in an ever changing United Kingdom and what does the future hold . History coupled with all the insiders juicy bits makes this book a real page turner .

I really enjoyed reading The New Royals. It is the first book I’ve ever read about the Royal family and whilst there were no bombshells or previously unknown revelations, it gave a very good and detailed account of the British Royal family both past and present. It was written prior to the late Queen’s passing and posed questions about the future of the monarchy. The many references cited, which include previous interviews and conversations with many of the people closest to the Royals, are excellent, and give the reader a very clear understanding of how the Royal family functions. My only irritation if you like, is that the book is written by a British author but is obviously aimed at a US market, with the vocabulary and spellings in US English, rather than UK English. This was a little unexpected and dare I say slightly annoying, but I didn’t let it put me off and I gave this review five stars as I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I wish I had started this book earlier and then I could have asked for a refund. When you read Lady Colin Campbell’s books, they are well researched, well written, have multiple sources and substance. This is true of most other royal authors. The New Royals was more like a quick summary or overview and I thought, while reading it, that I could have done a lot better job of writing on the subject myself. Money for old rope sprang to mind.
