The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History Of The Porn Film Indust ry

£16.40

A raucous and revealing oral history of the birth of the adult film industry, The Other Hollywood peels back the candy coating to let the true story be told — by the stars, movie makers, and other industry players who lived it. And what a story it is: Through hundreds of original interviews, contemporary newspaper accounts, police reports, court testimony, and more, Legs McNeil and coauthors Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia trace today’s billion-dollar industry from its makeshift, mob-connected origins to the Internet age. Along the way we encounter porn stars such as Linda Lovelace, John Holmes, Traci Lords, and Savannah — along with countless mainstream stars, politicians, FBI agents, and more.

Epic, hilarious, and moving, The Other Hollywood contributes to the porn industry the one thing missing in all previous accounts: a vivid, tragicomic, irresistible humanity.

I love this book and its interview style. Telling the history of screen porn from the early days of burlesque cinema to todays multi billion dollar industry. The book manages to be sleazy, touching, tragic and happy in equal measures. Never judgemental it allows those there to tell the story in there own words and always lets you decide which side of the porn fence you sit on. Now I would like 2 sequels. One about gay porn and one about international porn and we would be sorted.

Very well structured, even though it’s an oral history & the interviewees are somewhat freewheeling. Everyone from porn stars to FBI agents take part, no stone is left unturned. It covers all the grit & the grime of the industry not just the usual rose tinted ‘it was a crazy time to be alive’ anecdotes. Definitely one of my top ten non-fiction.

I bought this book because I read about it in Paris Match and it seemed interesting. I am deceived. It is just a stream of different
people involved in the American porn talking freely. It would be
perhaps interesting as a talk show (still too long), but in a book
it is boring. I expected some personal views and motivations, as it
interests me, froma psychological point of view, how people become involved in porn (or drugs, or politics, or anything else, I love reality talks). But I have learned nothing, just anecdotes.

This book gives you basic facts on the pornographic industry, there isn’t a lot of hear evidence. It acts as a very good index of directors and films.

You will be considering buying this book for one of two reasons. (A) Tittilation factor or (B) All the claims of “exploitation” cannot be justified, can they?

If you are falling into (A) you will be very disappointed and probably give up after ten pages.

If (B), then grit your teeth because this is a very hard, and very long look at the porn industry. And it isn’t pretty.

The books looks chronologically at the development of adult entertainment, through to tax dodges, drugs busts, suicides and rapes.

All the major events are covered, from deepthroat to debbie does dallas to the rise of HIV and onwards.

I particular, I found the section covering the 90’s and noughties pretty hard, where performers knew exactly what they were getting themselves into and believed they could beat the system (incidentally, they didn’t).

This will no stop the consumption of pornography, but it may stop the belief that it is a victimless industry.

We’ve all seen some form of pornography but there comes a time when one wants to know what goes behind the camera. The actors the myths and so on. This book introduces a detailed description of what goes on in the world of pornography. My only complaint was the way it was put together. It’s very chopped up, that being said still a good read.
