Excellent book. Covers virtually all the Operas giving the plots, musical critiques, and highlight performances. Couldn’t have wished for more. Very good value for money.

This is packed with information on nearly all major opera composers and many of their operas – it is not comprehensive, you need the full Penguin Opera Guide for that. I have used it frequently. The composer bios are informative, the synopses very helpful, and the overviews of each opera include perceptive comments on their musical merits written with genuine insight and enthusiasm.
