Every day at 8:05, Iona Iverson boards the train to go to work. As a seasoned commuter, she knows there are rules that everyone should follow:

· You must have a job to go to
· Don’t consume hot food
· Always pack for any eventuality
· You must never speak to strangers on the train

Iona sees the same group of people each day – ones she makes assumptions about, gives nicknames to, but never ever talks to.

But then, one morning, Smart-but-Sexist-Surbiton chokes on a grape right in front of Iona. Suspiciously-Nice-New Malden steps up to help and saves his life, and this one event sparks a chain reaction.

With nothing in common but their commute, an eclectic group of people learn that their assumptions about each other don’t match reality. But when Iona’s life begins to fall apart, will her new friends be there when she needs them most?

It’s taken me a long time to get into this book. Wouldn’t recommend, although the person who suggested I read it, loved it

I’m not a reader and nothing fills me with more dread than opening a page full of words, but when on holiday it’s the done thing, and I have to say, I really enjoyed the pages of words in this book.

I make assumptions of people all the time, so I was delighted that this book was based on something that we’re all guilty of doing (even if you don’t think you do, you definitely do), which was why I chose it. I also wanted something that was quite light and not too hard hitting, would make me laugh a bit and would generally keep me in the relaxing holiday vibe. Based on other reviews and the blurb, this was the winner!!

The chapters are all pretty short (which is amazing for someone who doesn’t enjoy reading and stops often) and each one follows one of the characters.

I enjoyed the building of the seemingly unlikely friendships in the book and that there wasn’t too much in the way of drama. Everything I wanted to happen for the characters did, which is always a bonus. My only negative is that I did get lost somewhat in the time frames of some aspects and I think some sort of date reference (maybe added to the chapters journey) would have been helpful for me, but that’s a personal thing and I doubt most readers would find this too much trouble.

Great book, really enjoyed it. There’s a copy hanging around somewhere in Rhodes for anyone who wants a free version ????

I found myself buried in this book whenever I had a spare minute to catch up with the characters. It is all so believable, so ‘every day’ but still magical. The characters are relatable and original, I honestly never wanted this book to end! I could have kept reading about these people for eternity. I absolutely love Sanjay, there needs to be more people like him in the world. Thank you Clare Pooley for bringing the people on Platform 5 to life and helping me escape my day to day…and for your phenomenal writing skills. I can’t wait to get stuck in to another one of your books! 5/5!

Really enjoyed this book. Not often a fan of books switching between multiple characters but this kept me intrigued from the start and I loved the relationships which formed between the characters as a whole but also individually. Would 100% recommend

THIS BOOK!!!!!! Complete and utter feel good fiction at its very, very finest. It was so heartwarming and it made me feel so happy.

Iona, David, Piers, Martha, Emmie, and Sanjay are all regular commuters to Waterloo station, each jumping on at different stops. Thanks to Piers choking on a grape one morning, the number one rule of commuting (don’t talk to fellow commuters) is broken, and over time, they become the most unlikely group of friends.

Iona is by far the star of the show. Currently 57 and working as a magazine therapist, with a past of showbiz, glitz and glamour behind her, Iona exudes warmth, quirkiness, wisdom…she is exactly the kind of person who we should all aim to be more like. Be more Iona we definitely should!! She is the ringmaster of the group. The person who brings them all together.

The book gives a stark reminder that you never know what someone else is going through. Despite appearances and the front that people present, deep down there is often other things going on. And it’s a reminder that kindness is so important. Even to strangers.

This book really reminded me of a Sky Christmas film that debuted last year called This is Christmas, I even googled to see if Clare Pooley was involved in it because it was so similar but I don’t think she was. Also has anybody watched The Outlaws with Stephen Merchant? David really reminded me of the character that Stephen Merchant plays!

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. It’s good for the soul. So full of warmth and heart and happiness, even when you think there might be no more happiness to be found. If you haven’t read it, please do, you will not regret it!!

I’ve read a lot of books but this is the first time I found myself invested in every character. I actually cared what happened to them. I got a train to work for years and hardly ever spoke to anyone even though you saw the same faces every day. This novel is about what happens when you do. I absolutely loved this story and was so sorry when I finished it. The detail is so well thought out. I found myself alternately laughing out loud and filling up with tears. Just read it!

It was a fabulous read. I loved how the author intertwined the characters in the book. It’s so true to life which we may have all done at some point. I’m looking forward to reading other books from this author. I also thought the way she described her findings for the book was very real.
