__________
The beautiful game is under threat. The greed and selfishness of the biggest clubs is harming the sport, with smaller clubs struggling for financial survival and supporters being left behind.
It’s time to fix football.
__________
Football is the people’s game. A sport accessible to everyone and enjoyed by millions around the world.
But football is broken. Beneath the glamourous sheen of the Premier League, it’s a game that’s rusting and rotten. The growing influence and wealth of the biggest teams is harming the game, leaving fans out of pocket and smaller clubs clinging to survival. The European Super League, which looked to eradicate competition in favour of guaranteed profits, was just the beginning.
This isn’t what football is about. Something’s got to change. Enough is enough.
Gary Neville has had a front-row seat in football for over 30 years, witnessing the sport at every level – as a player, a coach, a pundit and an owner. Most of all, he’s a fan. Shocked by the state of the game, Gary looks to find out how we got into this mess, who’s responsible, and what we can do about it.
The People’s Game is Gary’s vision for a brighter future. Drawing on interviews with those at the epicentre of the sport’s biggest issues – from the role of ownership to the lack of funding in the football league, the rise in racism, ownership models and the future of the women’s game – he explains how football has sleepwalked into this mess and offers a new path forward. With stories from his own playing career, as well as insight into some of the biggest footballing decisions in recent history, this is a total look at the game today.
This is a passionate, personal and critical account of how football lost its soul, and what we can do to get it back.

Brilliant and interesting read so far, strong opening with the Super league, pure passion. Backed up with graphs of data at the end of the book, must buy for any fan of football. Glazers out.

An extremely disappointing book. Some very valid points made, and what seems like dutiful Wikipedia research to back them up, but it’s more a continuous attack of foreign ownership of British football clubs over 300 odd pages due mainly (it seems) because the Glazers haven’t ‘flexed the rules’ to invest and bring success to Manchester United in the same way as the owners of Manchester City have.
This book could have been an enjoyable online ‘long read’ article, but spread over 300 odd pages I had to keep checking I wasn’t reading the same chapter again and again, the same points are simply repeated over and over.
Whilst Gary Neville dislikes the idea of financial muscle distorting English football, he only gives slight reference to his own part ownership of Salford doing exactly the same thing in League 2 and below, he is quite happy to overlook and explain away this matter which really stresses the entire books credibility.

Brilliant book written from a great view point, with passion, allows you to relate to the game in a personal way

Very enjoyable and good read.

Positives – Interesting take on the current state of football and points I do agree with him on, i.e. Super League, Bury etc.
Negatives – It does feel like once you’ve read the first 5 or so chapters, you’ve read the whole book. A bit too transcript heavy.

This book is okay. I still can’t help feel he’s a bit hypocritical. He works for Sky Sports who from 1992 have stopped the poor man from watching terrestrial football on TV. Also, I reported about 6 typo’s via my Kindle.

Great read, very informative, an eye-opener!
Time for Premier League club owners to bring our game into 2023 and stop being so short sighted and insular.
Give the EFL the recognition and financial support they deserve.
