“A riveting book . . . few stones are left unturned.”―Roberta Smith’s “Top Art Books of 2019,” The New York Times
This fascinating and enlightening study of the tie-on pocket combines materiality and gender to provide new insight into the social history of women’s everyday lives―from duchesses and country gentry to prostitutes and washerwomen―and to explore their consumption practices, sociability, mobility, privacy, and identity. A wealth of evidence reveals unexpected facets of the past, bringing women’s stories into intimate focus.
“What particularly interests Burman and Fennetaux is the way in which women of all classes have historically used these tie-on pockets as a supplementary body part to help them negotiate their way through a world that was not built to suit them.”―Kathryn Hughes, The Guardian
“A brilliant book.”―Ulinka Rublack, Times Literary Supplement

This item was in mint condition. Very pleased with it. I bought it as a gift so cannot comment on the book itself.

What an excellent book! Very accessible read about tie on pockets through history with many photographs throughout. As a textile artist this strikes a great balance of historical fact and textile interest. Excellent research and cross referencing – lots of content . Thoroughly enjoyable read. Highly recommend

By studying pockets of all types, plus the historical records where they are mentioned, this is a really complete history of the tie on pocket. What they looked like, how they were made, what was kept inside. Beautifully illustrated throughout with plain, printed and embroidered pockets. A must for any historian of costume and textiles.

I love social history and I love Needlework. This book was right up my street. I enjoyed every word of it whllst feeling I was looking at a part of the lives of many women of the past. Who would not feel for those whose only tenuous bit of private life was a pocket worn under their clothes in the day and put under their pillow at night? Another time, another place, it might have been any of us.
