The Raging Storm: A brilliant and tense mystery featuring Matthew Venn of ITV’s The Long Call from the Sunday Times bestselling author (Two Rivers)

£12.30

Detective Matthew Venn returns in The Raging Storm, the next captivating novel in the Two Rivers series from Ann Cleeves, the number one bestselling author and creator of Vera and Shetland.

When Jem Rosco – sailor, adventurer and local legend – blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. The residents think nothing of it when Rosco disappears again; that’s the sort of man he is.

Until the lifeboat is launched to a hoax call-out during a raging storm and his body is found in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own.

This is an uncomfortable case for DI Matthew Venn. He came to the remote village as a child, its community populated by the Barum Brethren that he parted ways with, so when superstition and rumour mix and another body is found in the cove, Matthew soon finds his judgement clouded.

As the stormy winds howl and the village is cut off, Venn and his team start their investigation, little realizing their own lives might be in danger. . .

The book follows on with his story but the characters seem to lack purpose and some of the story lines seemed to be in the puff up the book and go nowhere. I still found it easy to read but the final conclusion wasn’t as satisfactory as usual and i was tempted to skip read a few times.

Always look forward to Ann Cleeves novels. I read them too quick and have to wait then for the next one.
I was totally engaged with the characters and storyline until it unwrapped and revealed the reasons for the murders then it became a bit too incredible and dare I say rushed. I don’t give away plots like some reviewers do on these pages … that’s not reviewing. I like to make my own mind up so avoid the detailed synopsis put out. So read and enjoy.

Another good read ????. The use of American English spellings in a UK published book is really annoying!! Please refrain from doing this. Plus, I came across a few inaccuracies. Would have given 5* had it not been for these.

I’ve read every Vera, Shetland and now Two Rivers crime novel and have to say that this latest book is not amongst the best. Lots of well described characters and coastal scenery, but marred by repeated tedious interviews with witnesses and potential suspects.
